Questions About Business degree at TESC
#1
Hi Everyone,

I am new to posting on this forum... i've been hanging out in the Exam Feedback one for a while, but it's time i really start making sure i am on the right path and not wasting my time and money. So, after a lot of reading on the TESC website and these forums, i am still a bit confused. If any of you are able and willing, i would much appreciate some advice and guidance :-)

A very quick background: i started off at regular university locally to where i live, but i soon realized i was wasting my time and money because i was already working in my professions i want to do with my life, and class was impeding those (hair designer & wedding photographer). So, i found out about TESC and i have been doing tests while working pretty much full time.

I want to get my BSBA with a focus in Entrepreneurship, because i am working in a family business, as well as running my own, and i feel that degree would be very useful to have.

As far as testing and other classes go, i have finished roughly 40 credits, soon to be 46, Lord willing. I only really know about Cleps, Dantes tests, and Tecep exams--the others are completely foreign to me.

Here's what my tentative mapping out of my plan looks like...questions about it all will be at the end :-)

I. General Education Requirements (60)

A. English Composition (6) FINISHED w/ AP exam

B. Humanities 12
Managerial Business Communications (3)
Other humanities (9)
-Spanish (6 credits)(taken)
-Intro to World Religions DSST (taken)

C. Social Sciences 12
Macroeconomics (3)
Microeconomics (3)
Other social sciences (6)
-Intro to Sociology Clep (taken)
-Human Growth & Development Clep (taken)

D. Natural Sciences and Mathematics 9
Precalculus Mathematics or Quantitative Business Analysis (not sure which)
Principles of Statistics (3)
Other natural sciences (3)
-Biology Clep (6) (soon to be taken)

E. General Education Electives 21
-European History Class (Community College) (taken)
-Western Civ. II (Class from University) (taken)
-Intro to Psych (Class from University) (taken)
-Math 101--Math Concepts ( Class from University) (taken)
-US History II Clep (taken)
-Humanities Clep

II. Professional Business Requirements 54

A. Business Core 27
Intro to Business Law CLEP
Intro to Computing DSST
Financial Accounting CLEP
ACC-102 (Principles of Mang. Accounting class)
Principles of Finance DSST
Introduction to Marketing CLEP
Business Ethics in Society DSST
BUS-421 (Business Policy class)
Principles of Management CLEP

B. Area of Study: Entrepreneurship
Introduction to Entrepreneurship –MAN-230
Small Business Finance –CLASS
Small Business Marketing—CLASS

2. Electives
Advertising
Consumer Behavior
Marketing and Product Innovation
Planning and Growing New Ventures

Area #4:
C. Business Electives 9
Introductory Business CLEP
Personal Finance DSST
Principles of Supervision DSST

III. Free Electives 6
Anything

Now, my questions:

1). How does this look as a whole? Am i making any critical errors that you can see of? I have studied and studied the plans on the tesc website and this seems to be alright, but i am sure i am missing something.

2). Are there any tests i am missing out on that i've listed the class instead?

3). While i am highly interested in Entrepreneurship, i want to take the financially smart path--would it be less classes and more tests if i chose another focus?

4). Applying to TESC--at what stage in your testing did you apply? What stage would you recommend to apply?

5). Tuition--which plan is the smartest to go? On the website, it said that the comprehensive covers up to 36 credits in a year, and it included transfer credits...can you only transfer in so many on that plan? Tuition is a big reason i've been thinking of changing my focus to something like management, so i could do more tests and less classes/course credit hours to pay for.

Absolutely annnny advice you can send my way will be amazingly helpful. Thank you!!!!

There's an Advertising TECEP exam you can take, and you might find some classes at Adams State College or LSU Independent Study for the electives in your Area of Study.

You can also do the business policy tecep.
Don't apply to thomas edison and pay their 2800 enrollment fee for out of state tuition until you know you are <6 months away. Most people do it when they realize they have finished the macro, micro, statistics and business core to get an idea of where they are.
It takes 6 weeks for thomas edison to give you an eval.

The entrepeneurship focus is going to require some real classes so you might find that you'd be satisfied with general business or accounting.
Penn Foster has some accounting classes so I think you can use them for an accounting concentration.
If you know computers pretty well you can do a CIS concentration with some TECEPs, some Penn Foster classes, the MIIS dantes and the rest of the credits can come from certicications you may or may not have.

I'm working on my BSBA CIS and am nearing the end.
BSBA CIS from TESC, BA Natural Science/Math from TESC
MBA Applied Computer Science from NCU
Enrolled at NCU in the PhD Applied Computer Science
