Question if pursuing Psych Major at EC
#11
Thanks for all of the suggestions. I will have to see when it can be done, as I have an employer required UL course starting in early March that may interfere with an April date. Too bad it is not offered in the summer Smile

I will be checking into texts now and start working, either way.

Thanks!

I believe your theory has some credence -- less participants might skew the percentage and it would definitely be less students which means less distractions.

By the way, for other people's information, the fee is increasing slightly for subject GRE tests as of January 1, 2010 -- to $140. Still a bargain.

yw, here's the link btw GRE Subject Tests: About the GRE Subject Tests

And about my theory, yes less students may matter, but I meant less "smart" students, assuming the "smart an serious" students wouldn't procrastinate and take it as early and opportune time as possible for their applications.

I have been looking at ALEKS Stats, too. I found another person who confirms Peace123's recent experience with credits for this:

It's good news!

What are the extra 3 UL credits that you need? (I thought everyone only needed 30 UL.)

Sorry to disrupt the GRE conversation.... Thanks for the tip about the best time to take the exam. That is an interesting theory (about fewer students). I did check, though, and your scores and credits and the other test-taker's scores and credits line up with the 3 years (2005-2008) example table of scores given in the back of the latest ETS book. Apparently a seemingly small difference in scaled score, does give a large difference in percentile. Congratulations - You have done an amazing job in finishing up your degree!

meh, oh well, I guess I came up with that theory to try to make myself feel better Tongue

You have NOTHING to feel bad about. You took this opportunity and rocked it! (I'd be thrilled with 40 credits in 18 months and you got that in one month. WOW!)

I still like your theory (of fewer students). I have been wondering which is the best session to choose to take the GRE.

Not really extra 3 credits -- just listed in ECs handbooks as needing 30 - 33.

I may have to reconsider starting stats at this time and instead start studying for the GRE and put it behind me in April, then follow with stats....Hmmmm.

There is a small section that deals with stats on the gre, it would help with your stats class later on, or vice-versa if you took stats first, i guess.

Another great idea. Over my winter break I picked up Stats for Idiots from the public library, so at least I know that is available and have started pecking away at that. I found a Psych 101 college textbook for free and will be ordering the GRE study guides suggested. I'm thinking that is the best way to go first and then work on stats with Aleks once that is behind me. In the meantime, I will do the required course for work from March until about the first of June, and by then I should have a more concrete view of what EC will need for the balance of the degree, which will make it easier to just put everything behind and move on toward finishing the BS.

Also, it looks like the GRE method of going for as many psych class credits as possible may make this process move much faster, and at a bargain price of $140.

Time to get cracking again. Smile

By the way, for others considering this path, I went to check out the online site for the textbook you suggested: W. W. Norton & Company | Psychology 7 ed.

Great site with chapter information, flash cards for terms, and other study tools. Once more, THANKS!

Okay, as far as I know, the Psychology major requires 30 credits and the whole bachelor's degree requires 30 upper-level credits. The only time I can remember seeing anything about 33 credits was for the Math and Communications majors, which do require 33 credits now and 15 of those are upper-level.

Double-check, but hopefully this means you can take 3 more upper-level credits off of your degree plan.
