Question for Clep and DTTS
#1
Good afternoon all,

I found the forum doing some research on my degree path today. I am a AWF in the navy reserve, I am finishig my BS right now. I have not taken any CLEP or DTTS before and trying to get an idea of what the process is. Also do many schools accept SMART transcripts?

Before I went into the military I was pursuing my pre-med in Bio. But now I am thinking of changing my degree path to be geared more toward the military. I am too old for navy aviation as a pilot, and would like to try and stay flying. Anyone have a suggestion for degree path?

Greetings Blue.

The process I use for testing is pretty simple, pick a test, find a practice exam, take it cold. If I do well, I study what I missed, and then take another if possible.
If that went better than before and is somewhat close to passing, I repeat the study what I missed, then go schedule the clep or dsst.

This forum is associated to instantcert.com, a ton of people on here have used it to pass their tests.
I also like free-clep-prep.com to guide me.

As for degree, you just need to go after what you think you can finish.
The big 3 are all represented here, and with TESC allowing FEMA course for free transfer, you can try for a BS in Homeland Security.
Tesc also has BS in health science.

Hope it helps.
DSST- General Anthropology - 52, Intro to Computer - 469, Technical Writing - 54, DSST Ethics in America - 59 (1996),
CLEP- Sociology -54, College Math - 550(1996), CLEP Principles of Management - 60 (1996)

This link will take you to the DOD sight or he Peterson's pre-tests. They are very helpful and free to DOD personnel.

I like to pick up the suggested textbook for a given exam and read it through. Thriftbooks is one of my favorite sites to pick them up cheap. I usually pay less than $10 for a textbook including shipping. You can use a text that is a few editions old. The CLEPs and DSSTs are not updated often enough to be a major problem.

As stated by others the Petersons pre-tests are a good way to gage how much studying you would need to pass the real exam. I have done that with most of the ones I have taken.

Your SMART or now called the JST transcript is accepted by almost all schools, the real question is what credit they will give you for what is recommended. TESC gave me by far the most. You have to apply and pay the initial fee to get them to review your transcript, but once you have that you can see how many of your credits are filled and what is remaining. If you have credits recommended on your SMART for your aviation rating you will have to give them some type of official copy of your MATMEP summary in order to get those.

You would probably need more Gen Ed credits than anything. Most of your free electives will get filled by your military training and schools. If you go with TESC I would start by seeing how much of their BSAST in Technical Studies credits you have. Thats the route I took.
AMU: 39 Gen Ed credits
Military ACE credits: 24 Gen Ed/GMS/Bus/Free credits
Clep: College Mathmatics 67 , Prin of Management 65 , College Algebra 56 , Anal & Interpreting Lit 65
DSST: Intro to Computing 452 , Prin of Supervision 446 , Management Information Systems 437 , Human Resource Mgmt 68 , Organization Behavior 63
ALEKS: Intermediate Algebra , Pre-Calculus
Straighterline: Accounting I , Accounting II , Finiancial Accounting , Business Ethics
TEEX: Cybersecurity for Everyone
PF: Financial Management , Strategic Management
Saylor: Marketing
TECEP: Advertising
TESC: APS-401 Current Trends & Applications

Be careful that you don't duplicate any existing credit. If you already have many 100 and 200 level classes completed, you will have to choose your CLEP exams carefully since they are only for 100/200 credit. DSST exams CAN be for 300 level, but not many. There are other exam options, but I'd suggest just CLEP/DSST until you have a school picked out.

Most schools I'm aware of will, how many credits they'll award may differ from school to school. In order to maximize your credits, I'd suggest one of the Big 3: Charter Oak State College, Excelsior College or Thomas Edison State College. As for taking CLEPs and DSSTs I'm not sure what the process is for Reservists, but I imagine you are eligible to take them on base for free or minimal cost. Check with base education office. As for preparing for them, take a look here: Study Guides - Degree Forum Wiki

It depends upon what your military training has been and what you want out of finishing a degree. If you have the training and licenses in an aviation-related field as it sounds like you might, give TESC a look-see: Thomas Edison State College: From accounting and criminal justice to nuclear engineering technology and nursing, Thomas Edison State College offers degrees and certificates in more than 100 areas of study Many of the degree requirements may already be completed just through your military training. If this is just for advancement, consider the BSBA. You can still nearly test-out of the whole degree, with a couple of exceptions.
