Hi,
I have been reading about these on the forum and I have a few questions that I can't seem to get answered. :willynilly:
1) I saw on the website that there is a $85 fee. Is there a fee from the testing center that you take it at? Or is it just $85?
2) What would be the purpose of taking a UExcel Exam over a CLEP? Cost?
3) Does the College Writing cover the English Comp requirement for TESC?
Thanks.

Horsemaniac 1) No sitting Fee for the exam. But you have to take it through a Pearson Vue site that offers the exam. (Not all of them offered the UExcel stuff when I took College Writing.)
2) Well, there's a few ways to look at the purpose. One is that, for tests that duplicate between CLEPs and DSSTs, you can have a fallback in case taking the similar test through the other avenue doesn't go well. Then they offer the exams for things like Physics and Political Science that CLEP or DSST doesn't offer. Also, I believe that the UExcel gives credit through Excelsior College, so it might be accepted (as a 'transfer credit') where CLEPs & DSSTs may not be. (It might also be a way to get around the max credit through CLEP/DSST that some colleges have, but YMMV).
3) Can't helpya there. Sorry.
Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Wile E. Coyote, genius. I am not selling anything nor am I working my way through college, so let's get down to basics: you are a rabbit and I am going to eat you for supper. Now don't try to get away, I am more muscular, more cunning, faster and larger than you are, and I am a genius, while you could hardly pass the entrance examinations to kindergarten, so I'll give you the customary two minutes to say your prayers.

Thanks. I appreciate the help. I am looking into these, but I'm not sure. The only one that I would need to take would be the College Writing. Is the UExcel College Writing easier or harder than the English Comp CLEP?

Horsemaniac Well, I haven't taken the English Comp CLEP. The UExcel college writing test only consists of two essay questions. So, there's where you'd have to decide for yourself as far as the level of difficulty.
If you use the search feature, I've done a pretty long post in the past on my experience, and you may be able to gain a bit of insight to the test through that.

For EC, it does meet the written English requirement and is graded.
If TESC accepts this exam, it is only 3 credits, so you will need another 3 credits in English for TESC's 6 credit requirement.
Here is TMW2010's great thread about this exam:

Thank you for the link. I read it and it was very helpful. I didn't even realize that the UExcel exam was only 3 credits and that I would need to get 3 more for TESC. Thanks for pointing that out. I am thinking that I might just stick with the English Comp CLEP so that I won't have to take another test to get the other 3 credits since the English Comp is 6 in one shot. Thanks for all the feedback. I appreciate it!

No problem. I'm happy to help and TMW did all of the work, like actually taking the exam and giving feedback.
Yes, since this CLEP is 6 credits, I'm sure that is why it is a popular choice for TESC students. It is not accepted at all for EC students, so UExcel is a good option for them.
