I literally know nothing about programming. I could probably learn to program if I were sufficiently motivated but so far I've managed to get through my life without any real knowledge of this subject. So maybe it's a bit more of a surprise to me than to you that Python has become the most popular programming language (according to some guy).

Python is very easy to learn as far as programming languages go, and is used more are more so in introductory courses. It's been gaining momentum for a couple decades now. This doesn't surprise me, seems fitting.

This isn't surprising considering the growth in data science. Python is one of the main languages used.

There's a list somewhere of the most popular programming languages. It gets updated pretty frequently. Python has been high on the list for a while now. I'll have to see if I can find that page.

Yeah I've seen a lot of those types of lists over the last few years, sometimes lists for specific uses/applications. Python being one of the easiest to learn, one of the most versatile, and being heavily used in a lot of hot jobs right now(data science, cybersecurity, ai, cloud/network automation) has python being one of the top languages. This is something that comes up a lot when I'm networking/interviewing too.
I recommend Python to everyone since it's beginner friendly and can probably apply to whatever you want to do. In the off chance you need to learn another language later on for a specific purpose, having python already under your belt will make it much easier to pick up new languages.

If you were doing frontend jobs, you would only need HTML, CSS, Javascript & then learn some frameworks.
If you were going to get into gaming you probably need to learn C++ and a gaming engine.
AI uses Python.
If you were heavy into Wordpress, PHP is very popular.

Java is a very in demand programming language. I’d say the demand is equal to that of python. R is very much in demand as well for data analysis.
