Hi everyone! I have a question I hoped you'd be able to help me out with.
I finished the TESC course "Leaders in History" some weeks back, and I was just looking over my work for the class. I have a blog, and I was wondering if it would be copyright infringement or something else illegal if I copied what I wrote for some of my papers or discussion posts, and published it on my personal blog. No money involved.
/begin barrage of questions
What do you all think? Are there rules about this sort of thing? Do I need to ask TESC? Or am I ok to blog anything I write for college classes because it's my work? Obviously I wouldn't publish something on my blog and then submit that as an assignment, but after it's been graded (or after the class is over), is it ok?
/end barrage
Thank you!

You own the copyright for what you write unless you sell the rights to someone else.
TESC doesn't get the rights to your written assignments.
If you did want to sell something you've written you would have to first tell the buyer/publisher where you had previously submitted it , I think even as a homework assignment would count.

Thank you, JBtesc! And since Cookderosa, Sanantone and Dathi liked the post, I assume that those are your opinions too

Some Internet research confirmed that this is what others think too. Thanks again all!

I wrote a paper in my IDS 101 class at COSC and subsequently had it published in a state wide law enforcement magazine. The editor of the magazine approached me about publishing it after he had read a copy of it given to him by his friend. I have received many requests for copies of that paper by many agencies and companies both in and outside of Texas prior to it being published. I really didn't think that paper was all that special, but my agency has used it for research justification for a major budget line item. I'm glad it was useful for others. So my thought is, if you want to have your paper published, more power to you, just one more credit to add to your resume / CV. As it was already pointed out, the complete rights to that paper are yours unless you assign them to someone else.

The obvious exception would be publishing a classmate's discussion post. You would need their permission for that. But if it's just your writing then there is no problem with it.

:ack: Wow, I didn't know that about turnitin.com! Thankfully I don't do that with TESC.

I think in a law suit, turnitin.com would have a difficult time supporting their claim of complete and exclusive license, depending on what is being argued. They may have limited exclusive license to use your paper for the terms of making their service stronger or more complete.
