Principles of Macroeconomics and Macroeconomics on StraighterLine
#1
Hello,

I have some questions about taking Principles of Macroeconomics and Macroeconomics via StraighterLine. I have a background in Electronics Engineering and work full time. I plan on taking up part time MBA and pre-reqs for the MBA are macro and micro economics. I have not come across either of these in the past. I made sure that the university accepts SL credits for the same.

Please help answer these questions:
- How long does it take to finish both these courses via SL? How easy (or tough) is it for someone who has an engineering background?
- Is there a proctored final exam at the end of each course?
- Should I sign up for each course individually ($399) or can I go the $99/month PLUS $39/course route?

Thanks in advance!

I'm currently taking SL Economics I (Macroeconomics) and plan on taking Economics II (Microeconomics) afterwards. There are 19 graded exams plus a midterm and a final exam for each course. The format is better for my own situation rather than the CLEP exams but I have to warn you that it is very tedious. How long it takes is up to you. If you can devote a couple of weekends to finishing each course, you should be able to do one or both within the one month payment. If not, well you'll end up paying an extra $99. The exams are not proctored unless you need them to be. That would be up to your school so you'll need to confirm with them. If you can take the CLEP exams I'd recommend doing that instead. From what I understand though you will need to know the material in order to pass them.

Which leads to a question that I have.... Does one need to take a micro and macro class for an upper level degree.... or are the CLEP tests acceptable? That would be my biggest concern. If I took a CLEP of micro and macro... or completed SL and they were not accepted, that is a lot of time and money wasted????

I think that depends on what is specified by the college. SJSU has a pre-req of micro and macro for MBA and it lists SL as one of the options to get this done.. so, i'll just take these two and not the CLEP.

Both are 100-level courses so I am not certain what you mean by "upper level degree". If you do not know for certain where you will utilize the courses, and your choice is between SL & CLEP, the CLEP is more likely to be accepted since most schools have set policies for CLEP. ACE evaluated courses, on the other hand, are often up to the discretion, and I suspect mood, of a few individuals.

Got it- many AACSB programs require proof that certain courses were taken at the undergraduate level during the last X years & some require a minimum grade to avoid taking these same classes prior to starting the actual MBA program.
In this situation, you should check w/ the particular schools to determine what path makes the most sense for you.

I looked on SL, but couldn't find the reference text books needed for these courses. I would like to have those handy before I sign up for the classes. Can somebody prove me the information about those..

Thanks in advance!

Well I just finished SL Economics I (Macroeconomics) and passed with an 83%! Smile

If anyone needs the textbook and study guide, I'm selling them both for a total of $5.00 - that's it! That should be cheaper than anywhere else you can find it (if you do find it cheaper, buy it there of course!). This price covers the cost of the packing envelope and postage by USPS Media Mail, so if I make anything it will be pennies. This is a way to give something back to the folks at IC Forum and help out somebody who needs to take this course. From what I can tell you could also use this book as a study aid in prepping for the CLEP Macroeconomics exam if you prefer to do that instead. If you're interested, send me a private message and I reply with my paypal account info.

A few caveats:

1. Mailing by USPS Media Mail in Continental United States only.
2. Books are used and in acceptable condition - I make no binding guarantees though.
3. Book will go to the first person who PM's me AND also pays the $5.00 of course. Smile
4. Book will be mailed out the Saturday following payment received. Sorry, but my work schedule during the week is nuts and I can only get to the Post Office on Saturdays.
