I like to say that I did both.
I did a lot of speeches and debates when I was an Army Recruiter. I did many, many speeches at Universities/Colleges, High Schools, Town Hall meetings, Job Fairs, VIP visits, etc. The debating came in when all the Services came together. I guess I used to debate with the other services as we were all recruiting from the same area, trying to convince people how our service was better.

Oh, I think that counts. I would say real life speaking and debating counts for a lot more than competing in a league. Not to discount competing... it's great experience! But unless you put it into practice in real life, there's not much point.
I got to refresh my impromptu recently... I was at an event and the lady scheduled to speak for the organization I was with was late. So I had about 3 minutes notice to get up and talk. It was fun.

That sounds like fun! I cannot wait for the next year of competing to start!

I just got back from an NCFCA competition. I did debate with NCFCA for four years and speech for five.
It is exhausting but very profitable. I love impromptu as well, bkbarden.

I just realized that I never said that I did speech and debate.
This was my first year doing Speech and Debate and for those of you who know debate jargon my partner and I did very well. We broke at a tournament and had a 12 wins/12 losses record. If you're wondering I am in California!

That's great! Congratulations.
That's an awful lot of rounds... 24??? Must have been a big tournament. Or was that ballots?

Sorry for the confusion, bad placement of that sentence. I meant 24 rounds all year.
