AFAIK, the capstone doesn't just consist of a single paper? You use the other assignments to build your paper, I think. If that's the case, you couldn't resubmit those other assignments because of academic plagiarism. You then couldn't submit the same paper based off of those assignments. So, yes, I could be wrong but I think that an entirely new project would be required.

It might not be considered self-plagiarism if the student never earned any credit or credential for the prior submission. Check the policy, talk to the instructor.

Maybe so. I know at COSC for the English concentration you write a single paper. The other assignments are submitting a paper proposal, getting feedback, re-submitting drafts, etc. but it is one paper, you’re just doing chunks each week.
I don’t know for sure how the plagiarism checks would affect this situation. Definitely find out for sure, OP. You may save yourself a lot of work.

I always warn people that if they even think they might be late with an assignment, they should get approval from the Prof ahead of time. The Prof has much more leeway under the late policy in that situation. I also strongly suggest that people who are finding themselves overwhelmed by the capstone file for an extension once they have met the criteria (50% of the course completed). That takes the time pressure off.
I realize that doesn't help you right now.
In your shoes, I'd persue every avenue to have your assignment accepted and graded. The worst that can happen is they say, "No" leaving you no worse off than you are now. Don't pound them with phone calls. Instead find out what the appeal/exception process is and follow it to the letter. If it's emailing the Dean, then write the best email you can explaining your situation and ASK that an exception be made. If I were writing, I'd express how excited I was to finally be graduating, and how much work I had put into it. I'd also explain exactly why I turned it in late (misremembered the deadline, illness, attack by killer monkeys, ...), especially if it relates to your condition or other events beyond your control.

Thanks for all the replies, this a collective of advice I would also relay and replay to you. You are at that final course, don't give up even if you have to start that course again. You can get permission to reuse your research and materials for your next class if needed. Don't forget to copy your discussion with the instructor and the dean to try and explain what happened and what options are open to you.

If the OP has a mental health issue, and it influenced the ability to complete the assignment, Americans with Disabilities Act may come into play. Every university is required under ADA to have a department to handle disability issues.
This seems to me to be a ridiculously petty way of addressing this on the part of the professor. If college policy won't allow a late assignment, perhaps it would allow a late filing of a request for class extension, or an incomplete (which is immediately replaced by a grade.)
I can't imagine, if this is escalated high enough, that someone won't find a way to fix this.

ADA arrangements need to be made beforehand. If this is the first the school is hearing of it, accomodation isn't mandatory.

I urge you to re-take the class. Plenty of students have to retake a class at some point in their college career for various reasons. Don't want this be the reason that you stop, especially since you're already the majority of the way finished!

I'll add my experience. I failed my last class way back in 2004. Because I was upset, stubborn and probably some other less flattering adjectives I moved on without it. Thanks to this forum I finally corrected that oversight but it was much more work than if I had just swallowed my pride and retook that one course back then.
I hope you do not give up!
