OPIT – Open Institute of Technology has launched a Professional Doctorate in Applied Artificial Intelligence, starting in September 2026 and delivered entirely online.

OPIT programs and degrees are accredited by the Malta Further and Higher Education Authority (MFHEA). The Malta Further and Higher Education Authority applied to join the European Quality Assurance Register for Higher Education in 2023, but its application was rejected on 11 October 2024 after reviewers found it only partially compliant with the European Standards and Guidelines (ESG)—particularly because some reforms and procedures had not yet been fully implemented in practice. MFHEA appealed the decision, but in March 2025 the appeal was rejected, making the original decision final. EQAR later clarified that non-registration does not automatically mean an agency is illegitimate, but registration is an important benchmark of European-level quality assurance alignment.
