Online Computer Science Masters that's don't require CS bachelor's
#1
I'm graduating soon from TESC with a bachelor's in English, and I was wondering if anyone knew of affordable online Master's programs in Computer Science or related fields that let you get in with a bachelor's in these fields. I have some programming skills, and I could get more, but it wasn't my major. Any ideas?

You asked for a Masters in Computer Science which will require programming ability and a basic understanding of CS basics which usually includes data structures, computer architecture, operating systems and discrete math.

If you don't have a CS background, you could take some leveling courses or study your but off using MIT's Open Courseware (lot's of free CS courses from one of the top schools in the country) Free Online Course Materials | Electrical Engineering and Computer Science | MIT OpenCourseWare and try and pass the Computer Science GRE.

One of the most affordable and flexible programs at a little over $210 a graduate credit hour is here
Columbus State University: Computer Science - Master of Science in Applied Computer Science

tuition here Columbus State University:
Excelsior - BS Business 2008
Son #1 TESC BSBA Computer Information Systems completed June 2010
Son #2 TESC BA Computer Science completed November 2010 Currently in Florida State (FSU) Masters CS program and loving it

That MIT thing looks great! Does anyone have any experience with the GRE?

You can get the official giude/outline online and see what kinds of topics you need to know and study. It has a lot of mathematics required too. If you get a high score though, and submit it with an application for a MS program, it could help your admissions request.

I reread the Columbus State requirements for unconditional admission which states that:

a passing grade of B or better in courses substantially equivalent to
CPSC 6105 - Fundamental Principles of Computer Science and Data Structures, and
CPSC 6106 – Fundamentals of Computer Programming and Data Structures

So you could take those two leveling courses (Grad level) for around $600 each and then be admitted into the program. You could then use the MIT Open Courseware to get you up to speed in the other subjects.

Data Structures is so integral (and challenging) that I would take the first leveling course and decide if you want to move forward with the CS program. If you make it through those two leveling courses then you should be able to handle the rest of the degree program.

I say go for it, if you have the interest.

The CS GRE is notoriously difficult, so I would advise taking the leveling courses instead. Even though it's an applied program, check to see if you need Calculus I and II in addition to Discrete Mathematics.

I would take Geezer's advice and find a few masters in comp sci programs and see what their required undergraduate prereqs are.
I think you will find that most of them have the basics in common and will include: discrete math, data structures, computer architecture and organization, intro to comp sci, and maybe operating systems and a few others.

FSU's requirements are probably the max you will find.
FSU Computer Science - UG CS Prerequisites

Masters courses usually cost more than undergrad courses so you might just benefit from taking these at the undergrad level first.

If you want to do an MBA with a concentration in Applied Computer Science, NCU has it and there are no undergrad prerequisites for the program. It is a business degree but each course has a CS prefix and is taught by PhDs in computer science. Northcentral University | Online Degree Programs | Online Learning
BSBA CIS from TESC, BA Natural Science/Math from TESC
MBA Applied Computer Science from NCU
Enrolled at NCU in the PhD Applied Computer Science
