ODU and Straighterline
#1
Strike Old Dominion off of the list for accepting Straighterline courses - my eval came back today and it is a no-go.

Yeah ODU seems tough on transfer, and some of their degrees require 1/2 of the credits to be acquired with them.
I talked to them about a masters systems engineering program, once I am finished with my EET degree from TESC.
They pretty much told me to pound sand and stated they would not accept my degree for admission.
DSST- General Anthropology - 52, Intro to Computer - 469, Technical Writing - 54, DSST Ethics in America - 59 (1996),
CLEP- Sociology -54, College Math - 550(1996), CLEP Principles of Management - 60 (1996)

fromthisdesk,

It's a shame Straighterline isn't accepted by ODU, but I think the institution wouldn't accept your degree for a master's in engineering because it's a BSEET rather than a BSEE. From what I've seen, some graduate engineering programs flat out state that engineering technology candidates will not be accepted (*) without a boatload of additional coursework.

You could probably improve your chances by completing Calculus I, II, and III and Physics I and II (if you haven't). Also, never be afraid to appeal. I know of at least one person on the board who had success appealing.

I'm looking for a somewhat similar master's program without a BSEE, so I feel your pain. However, I wouldn't blame TESC on this one.

Good Luck and let us know how goes!
ALEKS: College Algebra, Introduction to Statistics, Pre-Calculus
CLEP: American Government, American History I, Principles of Marketing
DSST: Business Ethics and Society, Civil War and Reconstruction, History of the Vietnam War, Human Resource Management, Management Information Systems, Money & Banking, Rise and Fall of the Soviet Union
Straighterline: Accounting I, Accounting II, Business Communications, Business Ethics, Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, Managerial Accounting, Organizational Behavior, Principles of Management

Sanantone - No, I had originally planned on one of the "Big Three" or Empire State but after considering a range of factors I started to look at a B&M that would accept more of my military work (Navy Nuke) and offered an online format - ODU fit the bill. No huge deal on the Straighterline - only completed two courses through them and I wasn't out much ($) as my employer foots the bill. My post was more to inform others that ODU is not willing to accept Straighterline...

Muricles - Actually, I am interested in their BSMET - it is TAC/ABET accredited and it would release me from having to beg my way into a masters program in engineering. I haven't fully committed to them yet as they have a tough transfer policy and at best, it would take me another two years to finish their program.

Yeah I don't blame TESC really. This is ODU being mightier than thou with ABET thing..
Not sure how they can actually deny me from an accredited college that has equal if not higher standards than ODU's EET.
And where I currently have a 3.1 GPA

Of course they may have just been saying that to get me to complete my EET there, but they required 1/2 the credits from ODU, but I was already at 80+ credits.
But yes my intent is to take calc based physics and chemistry at the local community college in the spring.

Excelsiors EET is ABET as well.
