Does anyone know of any cheap/free writing courses (preferably self paced) that will help me brush up on my writing skills for graduate school?

I'm sure you can find something like that on one of the bigger MOOCs, like Coursera, EdX , or Udacity. You could also pay for one on Lynda or a similar service.

Even YouTube probably has something good for you.

On the U of Phoenix Sophia page you can sign up for the foundations courses for free. Including the foundations of English composition course. It's very basic for someone who's going on to grad school but it's still a nice little practice.

Two of my local libraries have free Lynda access with membership. Might be worth checking into. I think both had a free service for help with homework too (separate from Lynda.com), so if you need feedback on your writing skills, that might be useful.

Hi All,
 
I haven't posted here in quite a while, but this is something I've been looking into, also. Despite successfully completing SL's writing courses and my Capstone, I still am woefully intimidated by the dreaded research paper. Formal writing is a skill I've struggled with, and I know I need some kind of writing "boot camp" if I ever want to further my educational goals.

my community college offers these every summer through the continuing education / adult education dept. Always non-credit, usually very inexpensive. I'd vote for one with an actual teacher who will give you feedback vs a MOOC where you're passive.

Hi Jennifer, thanks so much for the advice. Unfortunately, at the moment an "in person" course isn't feasible for me schedule-wise but I'll certainly keep this option in mind for the future.

Walden is still offering free three-month terms in a variety of topics. They offer online tutoring and the professors provide a lot of feedback on papers. You could do worse than signing up and working on the formal papers with the Walden staff. The Tempo program is competency-based, so there would be no penalty for not passing a class.

This sounds interesting. I checked out their website and didn't see anything mentioning anything about free courses. I also chatted with a rep on their site and they didn't know what I was talking about. Do you have any other information on how to enroll in these courses?
