The Literal "Big 3" - WGU, ASU and SNHU
#11
U of A is Arizona's flagship state university. It's in Arizona's charter. It's like me saying I'm exhausted, and ChatGPT telling me I'm not. Anyway, among those 3 universities, ASU is head and shoulders above the other two ASU is an AAU university which is the most prestigious club to be in.

In other words, if you were to get a doctorate from ASU, you'd qualify for a faculty appointment at any university. In fact one of my professors at Georgia Tech is a Ph.D. from ASU.

I gotta say that AAU list is a surprisingly small club. I'm a little surprised to see U. South Florida in there. I counted it up and have taken classes or hold some kinda credential from eight of that list - most of which were finds through Degreeforum - so my hat's off to our members constantly finding pathways to learn from the best universities in the world.

I'm glad to see it changing from the others. These are the schools that have been willing to modernize and work with today's world. I truly believe UMPI can grow much more rapidly, once they have a better handle on their admissions process & offer more classes. All great signs!

People citing ChatGPT is amazing to me. There are so many errors in it.

Generally, but not always, the flagship university is University of "Insert Here" instead of "Insert Here" State University.

For a brief period, ASU was ranked higher than University of Arizona. University of Arizona is back to being ranked higher for now. As for PhD programs, what matters is the ranking of the individual program. ASU is ranked very high for criminology and some other programs, but it's not ranked high for everything. ASU also has a larger student body, so they have more graduates out there. At the graduate level, University of Arizona seems to be more focused on healthcare education.

  • ASU is the flagship university.

Technically, U. Arizona is the flagship university in Arizona.

ChatGPT disagrees with you:

The flagship college in Arizona is Arizona State University (ASU). ASU is known for its size, innovation, and extensive research programs.

A flagship university refers to the leading or most prominent institution within a public university system of a state, country, or region. It is typically characterized by its size, reputation, breadth of academic programs, and historical significance. Here are some common features of a flagship university:

  1. Historical Role: Often the first or one of the earliest established universities in the system, serving as a model or standard for other institutions.

  2. Prestige: Recognized for academic excellence and research contributions on a national or international scale.

  3. Comprehensive Programs: Offers a wide range of undergraduate, graduate, and professional degree programs across multiple disciplines.

  4. Research Focus: Plays a central role in research and innovation, often housing advanced research facilities and attracting significant funding.

  5. State Representation: Seen as a symbol of the state’s public higher education system, often serving as the primary institution to represent the state nationally and internationally.

  6. Athletics: Frequently associated with a strong emphasis on athletics, particularly in popular college sports like football or basketball.

  7. Large Student Body: Usually has a diverse and sizable student population, often the largest among public institutions in the state.

This is the response I got when I asked ChatGPT: What is Arizona's flagship university:

Arizona's flagship university is The University of Arizona (UA), located in Tucson. It is the oldest and most prominent public university in the state, established in 1885. Known for its strong research programs, UA is a member of the Association of American Universities (AAU), which includes leading research institutions in North America.

Arizona State University (ASU) in Tempe is another significant public university in the state and is often compared to UA, but UA holds the designation as the flagship institution.

I know that ChatGPT isn't 100% accurate so I did a search on both universities' websites:
ASU: A quick search didn't yield anything about it being a flagship university.
UA: A quick search led to a page in which UA specifically states that it's Arizona's flagship university: https://grad.arizona.edu/about#:~:text=T...t%20fields.
