Objective:
The course objective is to provide students with the foundational aspects of public health, from its historical roots to its contemporary challenges and profound importance in the 21st century. Students unravel the core functions and essential services of public health and examine the complex factors that influence health outcomes, especially within vulnerable and marginalized populations. Through the introduction to epidemiology and the role of data, students gain insights into how data and information shape public health decisions and interventions. Students delve into the broader scope of national and global health, exploring issues of health equity and the global challenges facing populations. Students navigate the intricate landscape of U.S. and global health care systems, understanding their financing, evolving services, and strengths and weaknesses. While students explore community health, they learn strategies for promoting well-being and healthy behaviors, the art of community organizing, communicating and marketing health, and evaluating program effectiveness. Finally, students confront the intersections of policy, law, and ethics, addressing their powerful implications for public health initiatives and the future of our communities in the face of emerging challenges such as global warming and public health emergencies.

It comes into UMPI as a health elective HEA 1xx according to the transfer db.
