New Gen Ed requirements for those enrolling on or after 10/1/11 Excelsior
#11
Hi Dcan!

The capstone course is the only course that is required and must be taken at EC. The rest of the degree can be tests, if available.

You're right; the CLEP used to be accepted for English. I do not know when that changed. There are other exams, like ECE (6 credits), AP (6? credits), and UExcel (3 credits) that are accepted. Now, that the requirement will be 6 credits for Bachelor's degrees, I hope there will still be several test options. They do tend to follow ACE guidelines. We'll have to wait and see new guides/catalogs.

I am glad your class is working out. It sounds like a great foundation for your future plans.

I took a look at the site you mentioned and it states to substitute EC's Eng. exam for CLEP. Honestly, I didn't pick through every word on that site, but since the 1st 3 specifically state to substitute EC's exam for CLEP, I think I probably have it correct.

Initially, I battled EC so I could take CLEP and have them accept it in a rather round-about-way. They stated (in some small print) that if an accredited school attests that the written english you've taken (CLEP or any other) was accepted by them for their required written Eng. credit, then EC will accept that as their equiv. Well, I would have had the B&M school write that I did satisfy their written Eng. requirement with 6 credits through CLEP and those credits should then have been accepted by EC. Sound logical? Nope. Not if it was through CLEP, even tho nowhere did it state at the time, that the policy excluded CLEP. I have no idea what they have to say about it now, other than forget CLEP as your written English requirement. Maybe they'd take it as a humanities elective, maybe.

It is no longer possible, to the best of my knowledge, to completely test out of any degree BS/BA through EC. They all include a capstone, which is not an exam. I'm grandfathered into an program so that I can completely test out, which is what I trying to do ASAP, before they decide to ungrandfather students, if that's possible.

Clear as mud?

Ah, forgot about the ECEs. Certainly their prerogative to restrict the CLEPs they accept. I just never heard of it so it threw me for a loop given their reputation.

podmates, I would be surprised that any school would allow credit laundering. They actively combat it from my understanding.

Exception: FEMAs through FCC, but you are actually taking "their" course, not an equivalency, just "delivered through FEMA." Rolleyes

The new Business and Technology Catalog and Student Guide to Credit by Exam are available and should answer our questions about the change to the Written English Requirement:

School Catologs - excelsior.edu

Despite what I had hoped, the English CLEP still does NOT fulfill the WER.

As far as exam options, the ECE (Excelsior College Exam) in English Composition does cover the 6 credits needed for the WER for Bachelor's degrees.

Also, the Uexcel and AP exams cover the 3 credits needed for the WER for Associate degrees.

There are several other ways to meet the WER. Please see the details on pages 3 and 4 of the Business and Technology Catalog.

Couldn't you use straighterline's English 1 & 2?

I think that is a good suggestion. This chart makes it seem that way:

Transfer College Credit for Online College Courses to Excelsior College - StraighterLine

We'll have to see if new EC students get further confirmation of this.

I wonder if my ENG100 English Composition and ENG121 Business and Technical Writing from PFC will cover the new WER?

And depending on how Albany state works out you might be able to wash the credits to pick up a letter grade so you have a gpa at ec.

Don't forget about the TECEPs! I took one to satisfy the WER requirement for Excelsior.

The new degree charts are available that show how the gen ed changes fit within a BSLS and BALS.

Choose the degree program here:

Then download the "Degree Chart"

The good news is that they kept the balance the same between Arts & Sciences and Applied Professional for both degrees. They continue to be very flexible and exam friendly degree choices.
