This course introduces students to the general and foundational concepts behind game design, including what works, how to integrate game elements, and how to support a player's experience. This is an introductory course that will prepare students for courses that focus on implementing these skills and concepts while creating a game.
What you’ll learn
- Introduce students to game design concepts (including game rules/systems, mechanics, narrative, and player experience as part of design)
- Support students before pursuing higher level courses in the BS in Game Design
- Provide students with opportunities to critically assess game design and build a working knowledge of design concepts required to understand game-making
- Understand and implement basic concepts of game rules, mechanics, and systems
- Critically assess design in existing games, applying course knowledge to design decisions while evaluating their positive and negative aspects
- Develop basic design plans and outlines to prepare for game creation in later courses
