Need help with Math
#1
I need one Math class to earn my AA degree with the military. My only issue is, I suck at math so taking a clep won't work. My local college wants me to take 2 math classes that don't even count before I can take one that does.

So my question is, does anyone know of a college that will allow me to take either Stats or Intermediate Algerbra or higher without taking the the basic math courses first?

Online is preferred.
Cleps Passed: (36) English Comp w/essay, Freshman Comp, A & I Lit, Princ of Management, , College Math, Humanities, US History 1 and US History 2, Marketing

Here are 2 possible options:

(1). Penn Foster:
http://www.degreeforum.net/general-educa...enn+foster

(2). ALEKS:
http://www.degreeforum.net/general-educa...ight=aleks

ALEKS takes a lot of time, I'm currently doing ALEKS right now to prepare for the Math CLEP and I'm up to 40 hrs, but I also suck at Math.

I'm also using http://www.khanacademy.org to prepare which is really good.

However, like any alternative check with your advisor before enrolling. I'm sure there are plenty more options.
Passed CLEP & DSST, Principles of Marketing, Principles of Management, Principles of Supervision, Human Resource Management, Here's To Your Health, Civil War & Reconstruction, Drugs & Alcohol Abuse, Introduction To Psychology, Introduction To Sociology, Rise and Fall of the Soviet Union, Criminal Justice, Into to Law Enforcement, Astronomy, Environment and Humanity, Technical Writing, Foundations of Education, Western Europe Since 1945, DSST Organization Behavior, ECE Ethics: Theory & Practice, Intro to Business, ECE Abnormal Psychology, ECE World Population, ECE Psychology of Adulthood and Aging, Fundamentals of Counseling

I agree with everyone about ALEKS. You can get credit for finishing it, but maybe at some point you might feel strong enough to pause and go take the CLEP. You never know. But...

I have another idea. First, tisk tisk tisk for taking the placement exam at your local community college:eek: I know your situation all too well, as it happens to my culinary students each and every semester. They need a 100 level math, but test in at 096 or 085....so you are looking at sometimes an extra year of classes!

First, you have to know how it works. The prereqs are enforced by registratation workers- not a brick wall- simply a pesky data worker. (when you go to register, and a flag comes up blocking you) You need to "un block" it with a department chair/department coordinator's signature. This is MUCH EASIER than it sounds. Simply find out who that is for the math department (not instructor, you need the actual head) make an appointment and go see him. (soon, like this week!) Tell him, you are a student at another college, you are nearing completion, you only need this one class from here, you tested a little low but are a highly motivated adult and feel confident that you could do the class. Show him your current grades as proof that you are a hard worker. Ask him if he would please make an exception so you can take the class here instead of elsewhere. (my money says he will)

I forgot to ask,
Are you 100% sure that your AA degree requires that specific course? AA usually is simply a math at 100 level or higher, meaning a math for liberal arts (MAT105 TESC) would work. Just double check.

I am not sure of the level it self but I do know it has to be Intermediate Algerbra or higher and I can also take STATS.

And that's an AA, not an AS or AOS or AAS?
I'm not saying you made a mistake, I just have not run across that situation before, and ya learn something new every day!

Ok, I pulled up the catalog. It is an AAS degree, which is an associate of applied science (I knew there was a reason someone told you algebra or stats! LOL). There were a zillion areas of concentration in the AAS, and I checked 7 of them before I realized they all probably have the exact same math requirement:

<< Mathematics 3
Intermediate algebra or a college-level mathematics course satisfying delivering institution's mathematics graduation requirement-if an acceptable mathematics course applies as technical or program elective, you may substitute a natural science course for mathematics. >>

If I were you, I would seriously look at the wording here. This is the exact type of requirement wording on almost every AAS program (I am a teacher in an AAS program for just over 16 years now) and I would bet a bundle of money that you can use any 100 level or higher since they added the phrase "or a college-level mathematics...delivering institution" which is wide open unless your delivering institution as some odd requirement.
The TESC MAT105 is a piece of cake, but just out of curiosity, which math does your community college want you in? You could probably follow the process I told you about asking to get into a 100 level intended for non-math/science majors (which would be easier than getting into intermediate algebra). Some schools have math classes like "mathematics for educators" or "mathematics for liberal arts" or "college mathematics" and possibly "applied math topics" which are all going to be much easier - and all at or above the 100 level.

I just completed mine in Avionics Systems Tech. You can take College Mathematics.

This is the response that I received from our Education guy before I tested. The question "which math cleps will satisfy my ccaf?"

"Anyone of these test will work for CCAF.

Dantes-Fundamentals of College Algebra
Dantes-Principles of Statistics
CLEP-College Algebra
CLEP-College Mathematics

"

College math was a little harder than it sounds but still pretty easy. It's not a gimme but with a little studying it's close.
