If part of their academy training was through a community college, they may even already have some credits on a transcript.

Thank you for this. We did check into it but he graduated from the Police Academy in 1995 and most places won't give credits because it's too old but he also has tons of certifications. We scanned them (and the Police Academy info which was from a county college) and sent them off the Pierpont and they will see if there is anything they can give credit for!

Most schools do not care how old credits are - they are either college credit or not.  I suspect that the academy he went to was not through a community college that granted credit for the courses, and that's why he can't get credit at other schools.

The best thing to do is check with the county college he went to and ask for a transcript.  If they don't have one, then you'll know.

Just following up - he did go to an academy at a community college and we requested transcripts but they didn't have any although the woman referred him to a professor there. The professor just so happened to be his academy instructor who is still there!  He told him if he takes a class there, they will put the academy credits on there along with the 3 from the new class so that's 18 for $1300. Not too bad considering he won't have to take 15 credits but curious, do you know how they classify those 15 credits? Do they match them up to classes the college offers?  Thanks for any info in advance!!

Are they going to add them as a bulk credit course (one course = 15 credits), or as individual 3 or 4 credit courses?  I had a technical certificate program through a CC and transferred them to TESU and in the end they didn't help me at all (one 'course' was 45 credits). TESU applied the 45 credit course, but it just didn't fit anywhere practical, so they went into Other (the 'lost' and not applied degree credit pile).

Wow this is great feedback!  Sorry that happened to you though. That sucks. Good question to ask the instructor and also Pierpont as to what they do with that if it is bulk.

I think $1300 is a lot to pay for 18cr, when they're most likely going to be Free Electives at any school.  At $72/cr, I would skip this option.

I also think it's a bit of an expensive chunk of change for 18 credits, since you're going to be getting the Pierpont BOG AAS, it really doesn't *need* those credits. With a month or two of Sophia.org courses, you can have more credits than that and it'll save the cash for something greater like a session at UMPI, that's the cost of HALF the Bachelors degree almost!

Hi,

While we are on the subject of Pierpont.

if someone has 30 RA credits,
about how long would it take to get the AAS degree,
by earning  the remaining credits through Sophia.org

Ask that person how fast they can complete a Sophia.org course, especially if they can multi-task with a second monitor. For example and as a "guideline" I would estimate someone can complete about 10 courses a month for $99/monthly subscription. So, that's exactly 1 month for $99 and 30 credits! It all depends on how fast that person goes as these courses are non proctored, I am referring to the ones without touchstones, the ones with touchstones, maybe 10 in 2 months for $199...
