Need Help Picking A Quick Degree Plan
#1
Hey everyone! I've been lingering around here figuring out what I wanted to do and getting all my ducks in a row before making a post and getting advice!

Your Location: State and Country - I work and live in NY.

My Age: 18

What kind of degree do you want?: Any degree is good, preferably business.

Current Regional Accredited Credits: 47

Tompkins Community College: 38

Biology 1, 4, A
Biology 2, 4, A
Physics 2, 4, B
Chemistry 1, 4, A
Chemistry 2, 4, A
French 1, 3, A
Composition, 3, A
Environmental Science 1, 3, A
Env Sci 2, 3, A
US History 1, 3, A
US History 2, 3, A

Mohawk Valley CC: 6
Intro to 2d art, 3, A
Financial Accounting, 3, A

Onondaga CC: 3
Intro to CS, 3, A

Current ACE, CLEP, or NCCRS Credits: 60+

I've gone through all of saylor's courses progressively these last few months, so I have all of their options completed.
CS1, CS2, Network Engineering, Software Engineering, Art History, Intro communications, intro psychology and intro sociology, environmental ethics, business ethics, intro philosophy, comparative politics, western political thought, intro to political science, intro marketing, intro management, intro business, managerial accounting, management info systems, corporate finance, project and operations management, customer service, Geography, Algebra, Calculus, Small business management, business communications, public relations, college success, and intro python. I know this seems overkill, but I figured I may as well take as many as possible to give myself as many diverse choices as possible! They're also relatively cheap, and I had the spare funds lying around.

CLEP Total Credits: 9
Micro and Macroeconomics, analyzing and interpreting literature

Any certifications or military experience? - No.

Budget: I'm not going to set a number, just as cheap as possible.

Commitments: I've got a remote job that allows flexible hours.

Dedicated time to study: I can put in 5-6 hours daily, more on weekends.
Timeline: ASAP.

Tuition assistance/reimbursement: None

Thank you in advance for any assistance!

@PrimPlanner, Welcome to the board, you're so young, I would work on the trifecta of certs, degree, experience. Since you have so many RA and ACE credits, you can max the benefit by doing the TESU BALS with a NSM concentration using mainly comp sci, math, sciences, etc and a BSBA combo with an area of study of your choice, be it General Management or whatever else you're interested in... Note: TESU has modified their BSBA and split it into a BSBA and BS, even though it should be the same degree.

I would recommend UMPI, except you need to be at least 21 years of age for that. Instead, I would pick a TESU degree that appeals to you and work on that: https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/Sa...ts_Roadmap Make a spreadsheet that shows what you need and map it to what you already have.

Apply for your chosen degree, pay for the $52 Medical Terminology TECEP (but don't take it!), and send in all of your transcripts.

If you can report the missing equivalencies for the Saylor courses you've completed, that'd be amazing and would help so many other TESU students. https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/Saylor_Academy
In progress:
TESU - BA Computer Science; BSBA CIS; ASNSM Math & CS; ASBA

Completed:
Pierpont - AAS BOG
Sophia (so many), The Institutes (old), Study.com (5 courses)
ASU: Human Origins, Astronomy, Intro Health & Wellness, Western Civilization, Computer Appls & Info Technology, Intro Programming
Strayer: CIS175, CIS111, WRK100, MAT210

I'd recommend TESU for a business degree (BSBA or BS, choose the AOS that interests you the most - https://www.tesu.edu/business/undergraduate/bsba). If you're not sure what interests you, then the GM AOS offers the broadest of subjects; something that is likely most helpful to someone younger and/or has limited work experience. Skip the 2nd bachelor, there is no need for it.

Why are you in such a rush? you are young? Heres the thing generally financial aid only pays for your FIRST Bachelors degree. Also if you decide on something else later it makes your first degree worthless. I'd say figure out what degree you actually want and go for that. Even it takes you 1-2 years you'd still graduate college sooner than the average person. No way will it take you 4 years to get a bachelors, especially with all your credits already. But you'd be better off getting an engineering degree, or better degree now than just rushing towards a general business degree just cause you can. Not saying you want engineering this is just an example.

Is there any reason you are in such a rush?

I would say think about where you want to go careerwise and what degree you want. Then go from there. At your age I don't think "any degree" is the best strategy.

At your age, you can do the trifecta that I mentioned, get some certs and experience while you're gaining credits towards the degree of your choice. You can do the BACS/BALS NSM I mentioned earlier, and stack that with the BSBA CIS combo, again, you want to mix and match your desired certs, degree, experience with as many cheap/freebie certs that have 'some' usage, such as the Coursera, TEEX, and other certs on the WIKI, get some experience along with that, get a balanced mix of them to your liking, etc. When you come out after completing these, you'll be a very good candidate for Business, Computer Science, IT or similarly related professions instead of stuck in one vertical, business...

Since you are in NY, you may want to check out CUNY SPS. (around 5k)
https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/CU...egree_Plan

Since you seem to be a high-performing student, Penn State World campus is another option though that costs $25k+
https://www.worldcampus.psu.edu/degrees-...rs-degrees

SNHU is a also a great option (cost 10k)
https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/SN...egree_Plan

So is TESU (5k with flat-rate term)
https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/Ca...gree_Plans

We haven't had anyone recently do PUG's business degree though their IT degrees are popular here (6k if you do it in 2 terms)
https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/PU...egree_Plan

WGU is also  a solid choice (around 3.5k for one term)
https://degreeforum.miraheze.org/wiki/WG...egree_Plan
Degrees: BA Computer Science, BS Business Administration with a concentration in CIS, AS Natural Science & Math, TESU. 4.0 GPA 2022.
Course Experience:  CLEP, Instantcert, Sophia.org, Study.com, Straighterline.com, Onlinedegree.org, Saylor.org, Csmlearn.com, and TEL Learning.
Certifications: W3Schools PHP, Google IT Support, Google Digital Marketing, Google Project Management

I’m considering CUNY SPS for myself, but it’s better for degree completion than for someone just starting out. You’re supposed to already have 24 credits for admissions. They only accept 45 alt credits, and not all the sources discussed here. 75 credits need to be RA. Of those, 60 can be transferred and they do only require 15 credits for residency.

If someone was really committed to the CUNY degree from scratch, they would probably need to do some possibly expensive trial and error. I don’t think we really know how they transfer TECEPs, Purdue Global’s ASK exams, the Finnish universities, etc.

CUNY SPS also has a section of their gen ed requirements called the “college option” (named because each CUNY campus picks their own), the ones at SPS are mostly practical career-oriented type of stuff. If you come in with an associate’s, you only need to take two of them. Without it, you need four. It would be worth laddering with a Pierpont or maybe Purdue Global associate’s.

TESU would probably be faster and cheaper for someone who doesn’t already have close to 60 RA credits.

CUNY SPS wouldn't be recommended for people starting from zero.

OP:
  • Lives in NY so they get a big discount on tuition
  • Has 47 RA credits
  • Has Saylor credits, which CUNY SPS takes
Without any more RA credits, OP could bring in 92 credits. Maybe get the degree done in 2 terms.

For an 18-year-old in the grand scope of life, three extra months to get a college degree isn't much extra time.

In addition to the advice, info, questions provided including my posts #2 & #6 (because in your OP, you mentioned "give myself as many diverse choices as possible!"), and since you don't have an associates yet... I still suggest the BACS/BALS NSM plus the BSBA of your choice, you can throw in two Associates, AS Biology/Math and AAS Applied Computer Studies/Environmental, Safety, and Security Technologies, you can also throw in a few Certificates along with these two.  By the time you reach 19 or 20, depending when your birthday is, you'll have certs, associates, bachelors, and gained some experience from your current remote work.

Here's the thread with the info you're looking at to finish what I mentioned above: https://www.degreeforum.net/mybb/Thread-...egree-HELP
Associates, Certificates Link #1: https://www.degreeforum.net/mybb/Thread-...d-Students
Associates, Certificates Link #1: https://www.degreeforum.net/mybb/Thread-...#pid407035
These are just examples, I have been recommending people to do the trifecta of certs, degree, experience and a balanced mix/match of them.
