My Degree plan for health studies at COSC
#1
So I did some degree planning but have the sneaking suspicion that I have incorrectly placed some of my credits. Take a peek if you have the time and patience. All constructive on topic advice is greatly appreciated. I have high hopes that rebel and J-Whatley will come swooping in to correct any errors. Thanks guys Smile

Can you take the DSST Ethics in America exam instead of the ECE exam?

Some schools and employers don't consider lab credits awarded from passing tests to be legitimate credits. That's just a statement of fact, not a criticism of your credits and hopefully it won't start a pointless debate hijacking your thread. It all depends on what your goals are.

Could you take CLEP World Civilization instead of the ECE exam? The CLEP might be easier to study for.

I was trying to avoid having "too many" transcripts when I apply to grad school. (I would love to hear your opinion on that BTW). I have FAMU/Excelsior/CLEP so far. I could do a DSST I just don't know about a fourth credit source. Not sure what you mean about lab credits from tests. I don't think I have any. ?? Thanx for the input Smile

Also, part of my goal is a good GPA in my last 60 credits earned before applying to grad school so....

FAMU = Florida A&M University

Can you take the DSST Ethics in America exam instead of the ECE exam?

When a biology course is 4 semester hours for a biology course, you are receiving 3 semester hours for the course and 1 semester hour for the accompanying lab. When you receive 8 semester hours for two biology courses, you are receiving 2 semester hours of lab credits. When you say 3-4 hours for microbiology, it isn't clear if you were awarded lab credit because we don't know if you received 3 hours or 4 hours.

Some schools and employers don't consider lab credits awarded from passing tests to be legitimate credits. That's just a statement of fact, not a criticism of your credits and hopefully it won't start a pointless debate hijacking your thread. It all depends on what your goals are.

Two many transcripts? I wouldn't count CLEP as a transcript. You won't send a CLEP or DSST transcript to graduate schools, only your FAMU and ECE transcripts. That's because CLEP and DSST don't award credit. They just report scores to schools that grant the credit. You have two transcripts. No big deal. I have 10.
63 CLEP Sociology
75 CLEP U.S. History II
63 CLEP College Algebra
70 CLEP Analyzing and Interpreting Literature
68 DSST Technical Writing
72 CLEP U.S. History I
77 CLEP College Mathematics
470 DSST Statistics
53 CLEP College Composition
73 CLEP Biology
54 CLEP Chemistry
77 CLEP Information Systems and Computer Applications

Alright a couple of things,
First I sort of agree with you that having as tack of different colleges is at best inconvenient, and worst case may turn off an admissions board. With that said CLEP and DSST aren't colleges. I sus[pect they would be treated simply as "credit by exam" I would open myself up to DSST because they offer great bang for your buck, for example a single test, Human Cultural Geography satisfies three areas of Gen Ed (Non US History, Global Understanding, and a Social Science) In your case that single $80 test knocks out 2 course requirements. Additionally you can likely take the DSST Substance Abuse Exam cold (your an RN, you should already know the bulk of that exam)...that gets a grade at COSC and it's an upper level course....your gonna need 30 UL credits (3 will come from the Capstone).

I would consider ALEKS or Straighterline for your Math, there are also DSST and CLEP's that will work. I believe the College Math CLEP will suffice on it's own at COSC, that would give you 6 credits instead of 3 for the one test.

DSST also has an Ethics exam, the ECE is fine too. There is even an option to do it essentially for free via the saylor.org Business Ethics course

So to complete your Gen Eds:
Human Cultural Geography DSST
CLEP College ALgebra (or whatever)
AN Ethics option
Any US History/US Gov Exam....note the Civil War is an UL exam at COSC

I am not completely sure about the Health Studies concentration....I did the IS option, but you are going to have to have the 30 UL courses 300-400 level from somewhere, the courses you have are all lower level as best I can tell. You will definantly have to have at least 18 credits in the Health realm at the UL....Substance Abuse, other Health courses, something...you might be able to use some UL sociology and psychology course such as the ones offered at CSU-Pueblo (they have a lot of self paced UL courses for around $450/3 credits)

I have some more info for you...but gotta go do some work. Smile

I'm always happy to complete the free application waiver for those applying to WGU (I get a free gift from WGU for this).  Just PM me your first/last name and a valid email so I can complete their form.

Thanks. That clears up a few things. And I should have just said credit source not transcript. I was just thinking in terms of money and how it may be viewed.

If you do the Health Studies you need to figure out where the 30 UL credits will come from, other than Substance abuse and the Capstone you will still need 8 three credit courses....

There are two Nursing courses including one that would satisfy the Ethics requirement at CSU-Pueblo Nursing > Division of Continuing Education > Colorado State University-Pueblo a couple of sociology courses might be suitable Sociology > Division of Continuing Education > Colorado State University-Pueblo At any rate you gotta go find the courses. That's gonna be the hard part.

And of course the Gen-Ed's as discussed above....I think if you figure out the UL and complete the Gen Ed's you can just round out the rest with FEMA or CLEP/DSST, whatever.

The big benefit of melding CSU-Pueblo with COSC is the ability to use F/A and the fact that they will all get a grade.

Are you sure you don't need a BSN to get into the Masters your looking at?

The programs I am targeting require an RN license and any bachelors degree. My psych of ad & aging and org behavior are UL. Do they not count because they are in the wrong discipline ? (psych) ? If they do count thats 6 credits.

Upper level is upper level....I know they can probably work in a degree program...I just don't know for sure if they will work for the degree in question....should though. With those plus substance abuse and the capstone you seem to have about 12 UL credits.
