Are FEMA courses worth it?
#11
Yes, you take them online. I guess you would call them "open book" type test. You read the course materials and then take the test online at home. As far as I know they count toward free electives at TESC. They might count toward an Area of Study if you are going into Emergency Management of some type. I don't know about the other schools. They are also "free" at TESC because they take the scores raw and they do not have to be transcribed at another school first-- and then transferred. I know EC has you transcribe the scores first through another school-- before they will take them as actual credits. This costs $60 per credit to have them transcribed at another school and then transferred-- so it adds up. That is why the original poster of this thread was wondering if they are worth it or not. If you are a student at TESC, I think they are definitely worth it because they take the scores without having to be transcribed and they don't cost you extra money. I hope this makes sense.

Thank you so much! Yes, that cleared up most of my questions. I think I have just one more: I'm planning on enrolling at TESC sometime, but I can't really tell when. I'm trying to take as many tests as possible first, so that I'll only have one year tuition (or something like that; I haven't really looked that far ahead yet. :p). I'm currently working towards a BA in History. With that background, if I take FEMAs before I enroll, what do I do? Do I print the scores at home and send it to TESC when I send the CLEP and DSST scores?

Sorry for all the questions. :o

I am doing the same thing-- I haven't enrolled yet-- but I am going to very soon-- as I am near the finish line with tests. I just want to pay the one year enrollment fee. I called fema the other day and they said they hold the scores like clep and dsst until you are ready to have them sent.

Would anyone know if they would be accepted at Humboldt State University?

@The OP:
They are very quick and relatively easy and there is no possibility of failing and subsequently wasting money.

@JNMHorn:
If you have no specific reason to believe that they will be accepted at that particular school than they almost certainly will not be accepted. Consider ALEKS and NFA, those are essentially free and will go on an ACE transcript. You school is much more likely to take those (check with them first).

In response to a previous poster, yes, TESC allows less FEMA credit on an associates than a bachelors but I don't recall the exact amount. I want to say it was less than half, but I'm not 100% sure.

When they say "free electives" is that the electives for "area of study" or general ed? When I look at the requirements from TESC for liberal arts there is a Gen Ed electives line then at the bottom under "area of study" a free electives line. I'm hoping they will work in either place.
Also, do free electives have to be 200 classes or above.

Neither. It's the last one III. Free Electives. General Ed. is I. Area of study is II. And free electives is III.
