It's not a trial! Students and teachers are eligible for Office 365 Education, which includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote, plus additional classroom tools.
All you need to get started is a valid school email address.

Wow... I can't tell or am missing it -- what is the duration? The page mentions a 1-yr discount for soon to be grads.

It says office education is free for students. Office personal you can get a 1 year subscription for. I have been downloading this for a while now. I will update once it finally finishes.
So I downloaded it. It seems to be working just fine. Took a while to install.

I am not sure. I put in my old CC community college email. I haven't been a student there since last year.
I imagine it would be hard to tell if you were a student or not.

Aren't there schools that will give you an email address if you apply? Before you are even a student? For free? I imagine, you could continue to do this in perpetuity...

I tried with my still working TESU email and the site knew I was no longer a student and would not allow me access. I think they've got this pretty well sewn up. I'd rather stick with OpenOffice than get roped into an MS Office that I have to ultimately pay for forever.

In my experience, free downloads of Microsoft Office 365 still work even a year-plus after my last class. There are no nag screens or "product activation failed" error messages. I even got a free upgrade from Office 2013 to Office 2016.
Your mileage may vary.
