I took it last month for the second time and passed with flying colors!! I failed the first attempt because of an essay.

Definitely use the recommended book, and pay attention to the chapter reviews. I would recommend you know inside and out the various types of marriages, and the weight of responsibilities with each one. Know the family theories in your sleep. I wrote my own flashcards to help me remember the theories, and used Quizlet sets to solidify it.
This is definitely a doable exam so don't freak out, but you MUST study!! Even my second time taking it, I was nervous about pushing submit. Use your scrap paper, and jot down everything you can possibly remember as soon as the timer starts. Then, begin to jot down some jargon to use in your essays. You will be thankful you did that, instead of trying to recall what that one theory was....
One important thing to remember with TECEP's. They are broken down in sections, and once you submit that sections, there is no return.
Good luck!!

That's an awesome tip. I would not have known, and I am going to schedule an exam tomorrow to see if I can get it done before the end of June.

I just finished the Marriage and Family TECEP. I don't know if I passed yet, but I am fairly sure that I did. The test was not difficult nor did it have any surprising questions. That said, there is no way to pass it without studying, as there are unique terms that are only mentioned in the book. Here are my tips to study:
Topics to review for Marriage and Family TECEP
1. The test is 100% based upon the first text listed in the TECEP Test description: The Marriage and Family Experience: Intimate Relationships in a Changing Society Bryan Strong, Christine Devault, Theodore Cohen. Current edition. Belmont CA: Wadsworth/Cengage
2. Flashcards and quizzes for the book can be purchased for $6.00 here:
http://www.cengagebrain.com/shop/en/US/s...utton=true
3. This is an excellent prep for the exam and will cover most of the material on the exam (if not all).
4. Review all terms on the TECEP test description (every word and term is likely to be on the exam, so learn all the definitions and theories mentioned).
5. Review all theories mentioned in the book, with particular focus on micro-theories and macro-theories (chapter 2). Be able to compare and contrast several of them. Read chapter 2 thoroughly or use Wikipedia to review the theories listed on the TECEP test description

I just took the Marriage & Family TECEP last night, and I honestly am still not sure if I passed. One thing to be aware of, that freaked me out and caused me to lose time talking to the proctor, is the exam seems to not be programmed correctly. On the top right "sections" area of this exam it jumps from 1 of 4 to section 3 of 4 when you hit the submit button after the first section. I was worried that maybe I had missed something in section 2, like 1 of the essays - but actually there is no section 2. There are 40 questions in section 1, 40 questions in section 3, and then the two essays at the end in section 4.
1. I am again going to say that the terms used don't always match the book - i.e. "modern feminists" vs "contemporary feminists".
2. Understand the core concepts of ecology of family environment
3. Study a lot on conservatism vs liberalism
4. Know what happens during gender role reversal in families
5. Be able to recall the steps in identifying as gay or bi-sexual.
6. Understand structural functionalism
I can't necessarily promote purchasing the Cengage quizzes, as I mentioned in my other thread earlier this week. Poor programming on their part as well, and they aren't providing quality customer service to resolve the issues. I did use those quizzes though, along with the other quizzes/tests linked from the Marriage & Family TECEP PDF page and also rented the book for chapter reviews and definitions.
This is the one and only time with a TECEP that I can say I literally ran out of time. Part of that though was because of the issue of thinking I'd missed a section of the exam, and trying to get it resolved with the proctor. Due to that I didn't have enough time to really answer the final essay question - which was worth 10 pts. I submitted with about 30 seconds left.

Took this TECEP several months ago, and it was quite hard. I barely passed, but I also didn't study as hard as I should have.
My study materials were internet sources provided on the TECEP page and course notes and exam outline provided by a forum user that took the online class. The material was about 70% relevant, so if anyone wants those materials feel free to PM me.
