MBA Review - Patten University
#1
I am 1 week into my MBA Human Resources program at Patten University and I want to try and provide a ongoing review as I move through the program.

The application and enrollment process was very easy, just had to send my TESC and Straighterline transcripts to Patten and fill out an online application. I had to send SL transcripts because Patten requires a grade for microeconomics and I had also completed Organizational Behavior with SL which Patten will accept for graduate credit as MBA-605 Org Behavior & Leadership. Patten let me start before my BSBA degree is awarded by TESC.

You work with an enrollment advisor as you go through the application process, mine was great and answered any question I had within 12 hours by email or phone. I have to admit once you get to the part where you are about to pay, the enrollment advisor is a little more assertive to close you. After payment you get assigned an on-boarding specialist who makes sure you get registered properly for your program and can access the learning portal/web page. After that you are assigned a student advisor for the duration of your program. They call to introduce themselves and email and/or call to check on you. I actually like the interaction with them.

It's already been stated by other posters that Patten offers a competency based program that is pay-by-term not by credit, similar to WGU. Tuition is $2000 for a 4-month term and you can complete as many classes as possible. As I posted earlier, there is a tuition special if you apply before September 30, tuition is reduced to $1600 for your first term only (4-months). Patten also offers monthly payment plans. One caveat is that you can only take 1 class at a time and you have to take them sequentially. Another caveat is that once you complete a term you are automatically enrolled into the next term, however, you are allowed to take a 30-day break but have to follow their rules carefully on when to submit your request for a break and set your next term's start date.

Once payment is made and you are officially enrolled, students must complete the online student orientation. Basically it's an interactive module on how to use their online learning portal and review of the university's academic policies. It takes about an hour to complete.

The student learning portal is great. It includes videos, flash cards (not enough), links to all of the study material, syllabus and quizzes. All of the books are included in tuition and links provided to download the book or read it online. While you can only complete 1 class at a time, all of the courses are open for you to review in advance and you can work ahead on reading, study material and projects but you can't take any exams or submit projects until you have started that course.

The first class is MBA-500, MBA Foundations, which is kind of a review class consisting of concepts from business core classes like business communications, marketing, economics, research methods, accounting, strategy etc. (I'm humbled by how much I've already forgotten). Each course starts with a non-graded assessment that tracks your competency and as you complete each unit and quiz, you get an ongoing assessment that tracks your progress and advises you when it thinks you are ready for the final. You work through each topic as a unit with reading material, videos, flash cards and then quizzes. You finish the course with final and a project. There is a "standard"and a "challenge" grading/completion mode that I will post about later, as soon as I figure it out. In general I would say the learning portal and process is a combination of ALEKS and Straighterline

The academic honesty policy is pretty strict so I'm not sure what more I can post about the classes, quizzes, projects and final, but I will say that so far it all seems pretty manageable. I'm only about a third of the way through the first class and I really like the format and the learning portal. All of the study material to pass the quizzes seems to be provided. I haven't started the project or the final yet so can't say anything about the grading.

There is a student (not me) going through the MBA program that has posted a blog to track his progress. You can view it at: Four Month MBA | Getting my degree in 123 days

I hope I can provide as much detail and answer any questions like poster "rebel100" did for his MBA review of WGU. The review he provided was informative and motivating and encouraged me to pursue my MBA.

All for now, I will update as I move forward.

Does Patten still require that Microeconomics and/or college algebra to be graded? As I thought those were prerequisites for students who did not have a Bachelor's in business only. I was also under the impression that a 50 on a CLEP is equivalent to a C, and that a 70% on ALEKS is equivalent of a C too.

This is really useful to know. I think I'll probably be going for this degree after I finish my BSBA. Thanks for this review. Like the others, I'd love to read some updates regarding how it's going after the first couple of months.

Love the school. I'm just not moving quickly due to my own issues. I need a cattle prod.
