Looking for a Tesc BA Communications roadmap.
#1
Good morning.

Does any one have a Tesc BA Communications roadmap they can share with me?

Thanks

Hi,

I would be very interested in this, too. My daughter is pursuing the communications degree from Tesc. Her tentative plan is below.

Interpersonal Communication from Clovis Community College (COM 330) *
Technical Writing from Penn Foster (ENG 216) *
Business Communication from Straighterline (COM 300) *
Leadership Communication from TESC (MAN 376)
Capstone from TESC (LIB 495)
Intercultural Communication from Central New Mexico CC (COM 335)
Mass Media and Society from Central New Mexico CC if it will transfer as Mass Communications (COM 120)
Gender Communication from Central New Mexico CC
Family Communication from Central New Mexico CC
Organizational Communication from Central New Mexico CC if it doesn't duplicate Business Com or Leadership Com
Digital Media if it counts for the major

* already completed

As you can see, the plan is iffy. Central New Mexico CC also has Writing to Media I and the Technical Writing DSST transcribes as ENG 201 so those are additional options. If anyone knows how the Central New Mexico CC courses will transcribe at TESC, I would be very grateful for the information!

Communications is one degree which requires several traditional courses to be taken. For me, I took many courses at my local community college and brought them in. Which part of the degree do you need help with? Are you looking for help on the area of study or the whole thing? You'll probably want to post your credits that have been completed and then it will be easier to give you suggestions. For bringing credits in, you'll want to talk to an advisor and make sure they fit in where you believe they match. You'll notice I got a bunch of upper level credits from a community college, there isn't a trick to it, just that TESC will match it to the best course that is coded in their system.

Here is my area of study (noting that students enrolled after July 1st require the capstone that I didn't complete). I'll place in notes on the sources, maybe that will provide a few ideas for you:

Do you know what the requirements are for Group 1, Group 2, and Group 3 in the communication electives? I can't figure out why they are separated into three categories.

Thanks,
Danielle

The categories are separated to match the requirements of upper level, lower level, and no more than 6 credits of journalism. Depending on how you move things around the number of credits in each can switch. It is confusing but they will work out as long as you follow the instructions they list. If you take courses which fit and don't take journalism for 6 credits or have too many upper level credits then things will start to be listed in weird sections as shown in my list. As with the other sections on the eval, the credits will fit in the best place possible and things will float around and work as long as you meet the requirements.

Theoretical layout would be:
N) Group 1
__________________________________________________ __ 12 credits needed (take twelve upper level credits, capstone (if enrolled after 7/1/12), and an upper level course used in the communication theory area in the section at the top of the area of study.
N) Group 2
__________________________________________________ __ 9 credits needed (9 Lower Level Credits)
N) Group 3
__________________________________________________ __ 6 credits needed (6 Lower Level Credits also representing the six credits of maximum journalism courses)
My completed "non-traditional" credits include 27 credits from CLEP, 30 credits from DSST, 6 credits from ALEKS, 19 credits from FEMA courses including PDS, 3 credits from NFA courses, 10 credits from ACE Workplace Training, 3 credits from a TESC TECEP exam, and 3 credits from a TESC PLA course.

It's going to depend a lot on where you want to get the credits from, it isn't as easy to plan as some other degrees since there are so many choices. You can look at a community college, take them at TESC, complete PLA courses, or even do some TECEP exams. You'll find a shortage of test out choices for this degree (at least with CLEP & DSST).
I'm also unclear if you enrolled after 7/1/12 and have to take the capstone, so keep in mind you need that if you are recently enrolled (it counts toward the UL requirement of 18 credits).

-Technical Writing DSST as you mentioned will fit in as a lower level course in category two or may float into category three like mine if you don't max out on journalism courses.
-Public Speaking DSST will also fit in here
-You already did it, but for anyone else reading this you can use COM-300 (Business Comm from Straighterline)

Suggestions at TESC:
Fundamentals of Speech (COM-108) - PLA Course
Introduction to Mass Communications I (COM-120) - Guided Study or Online Course (could do an individualized PLA if you talk to the school about it)
Introduction to Mass Communications II (COM-121) - Guided Study or Online Course (could do an individualized PLA if you talk to the school about it)
Public Speaking (COM-209) - Online Course or PLA Course
Interpersonal Communications (COM-330) - Online Course or PLA Course
Elements of Intercultural Communication (COM-335) - Guided Study or Online Course (could do an individualized PLA if you talk to the school about it)
The Story of Human Language (COM-339) - Online Course (could do an individualized PLA if you talk to the school about it)
Interviewing (COM-402) - PLA Course
Managerial Communications (MAN-373) - Guided Study, Online, or PLA Course
Leadership Communication (MAN-376) - Online Course (could do an individualized PLA if you talk to the school about it)
American Cinema (FIL-110) - Guided Study or Online Course (could do an individualized PLA if you talk to the school about it)
Journalism Courses (note limit of 6 credits):
Public Relations Writing and Editing (JOU-280) - PLA Course
News Writing (JOU-352) - Guided Study or Online Course (could do an individualized PLA if you talk to the school about it)
Desktop Publishing (JOU-393) - PLA Course
TECEP Exams (Paper exams with proctor requirement, $99) :
Public Relations Thought & Practice (COM-210-TE)
Technical Writing (ENG-201-TE) - Check to verify that this does not duplicate the Technical Writing DSST and/or not fit in this area
Introduction to News Reporting (JOU-110-TE)
Marketing Communications (MAR-321-TE) (Although it isn't a humanities course, an advisor recommended it to me so it should fit just fine)

Note that you can make most any course into a PLA by completing an "Individualized PLA". It requires a form and permission from the school. Check out Thomas Edison State College: Course Offerings for the search tool for that. Note that you can use codes with COM, JOU, RTV, FIL, and possibly others with permission. I competed an RTV (radio/television) course for upper level credit.

There are countless other courses which match but that should get you started. If you see a course you like, check out a local school and if they are regionally accredited you can take the courses there (which may be cheaper than TESC depending on the course, just remember to have them approved first).

Otherwise once you pay your enrollment fee you can schedule a half-hour appointment and an advisor can make suggestions too.

Note that I've answered three posts in three new responses, for both patsfand and a4tunatemom make sure you don't forget to read each post until I answered your questions...

To answer the question on the Central New Mexico Credits, here are the most likely course matches (once enrolled you can have an advisor plan them in or once accepted appeal them to match where you need them). They are all part of this degree, but whether or not they are upper or lower level depends on the matching courses available and may require you to work with an advisor to overturn their decision.

Intercultural Communication from Central New Mexico CC (COM 335) - Will be COM 335, I did this one from a CC and got it automatically
Mass Media and Society from Central New Mexico CC if it will transfer as Mass Communications (COM 120) - Most likely COM 120 but could match COM 321 if you can persuade the school to match it. Check out the course descriptions for both:

Introduction to Mass Communications I (COM-120) 3.00 s.h.**
Emphasizes the history of mass media and current trends, presenting information and activities to enable students to appreciate and evaluate the quality of print, audio, video, film, and television.

Media Consumerism (COM-321) 3.00 s.h.***
Analysis of how media consumers can comprehend, interpret and evaluate the mass media; focuses on ways consumers are affected by mass media and can influence what is being communicated.

It will most likely go to COM-120 but if you document a better match by showing coursework completed (provide a syllabus) you might get it

Gender Communication from Central New Mexico CC - COM 431 - Check out this course:

Gender Issues in Communication (COM-431) 3.00 s.h.*****
This course concerns the advertising, journalism, cinema, public relations, and television-radio professions' gender issues and problems. It covers the gender transition to a female majority professional workforce; causes of work-related gender problems, the cost of gender bias.

Family Communication from Central New Mexico CC - COM 438 - Check this one out:

Communication in Families (COM-438) 3.00 s.h.*****
Emphasis on the role of communication in families; theoretical perspective of family interation, current family issues, intercultural aspects of family interaction, effects of changing career/ family roles and intergenerational interaction.

Organizational Communication from Central New Mexico CC if it doesn't duplicate Business Com or Leadership Com - I'd guess that this one may duplicate and would become Business Comm, Leaderships Comm, Management Comm, or a Business Writing Course. The key to fixing this if you complete the course is to show them that it matches something new using a syllabus or course outline as evidence. This would be a good one to wait on until enrolled and have them pre-approve.

Digital Media if it counts for the major - Is this from Central New Mexico CC? This will be another one that will need you to probably help get evaluated properly by providing documentation. It could become a number of different courses based on what is provided to showcase the match.

Course codes were provided using the search tool available here: Thomas Edison State College: Course Offerings

You either want to be enrolled at TESC and have them pre-approve the courses, or stick to the straightforward (easy to match) courses first (such as Intercultural, Family, and Gender Comm).

Good luck to your daughter.

Cooperalex, you are awesome!!! Thank you so much. I didn't know that course offerings search tool even existed and I've been on TESC's site at least a hundred times because this my second child earning a degree through them. I'm sorry I forgot to mention that the Digital Media course was also from Central New Mexico CC. I can't tell you how much I appreciate the time you took to help with this. The communications degree is a whole new ballgame for us.
#10
It shows all of the courses that are in the system (and of course is there so you can propose an individualized PLA). What both you and the advisors will find handy is that when the time comes you and them can mention codes to each other and work things out if needed. I'm happy to help, especially in this case since I just finished that degree.
