Liberty University--- Difficulty?

Hi,

As I take Sophia courses,
with plans for a BLS from UMPI,
I started looking into Liberty University.

Quick question.

If you transfer 90 credits to Liberty,
How would Liberty students rate the difficulty of their courses?

I understand they have no proctors.

From what I've seen from the student reports online, the classes are not difficult. Each class requires about one hour a day, so if you take two classes per 8-week term, that's around 14 hours per week.

Yes, Liberty is an option, but I wouldn't jump on that ship at all... Liberty may have class requirements related to religion for undergraduate students, if you're not interested in those type of classes, it's a waste of your time. Cost wise, even with the discount, they're not much more expensive than the others we recommend, having said that, they still cost more... Last but not least, Liberty is known as an online institution with a campus... I'd rather again stick with public/state institutions first, then non-profit/private online institutions next, last or least on your list should be the for-profits.

Unless you want to quote the Bible in every assignment in every course, I'd stick with UMPI. Liberty University is even controversial or viewed as low quality in religious circles. I'm not saying that Liberty is low quality; that's just the general perception.

I would say Liberty University is similar to SNHU or UMGC in terms of cost and time, which are around $10k-$12k and 8-10 months, respectively. In terms of difficulty, they all have the same format of papers and discussions which have due dates. Also, their terms are all 2 months. 

Here's what one person on Reddit said about the Bible references:
"Its not every assignment and in the instructions it will detail what they are looking for. Honestly, the easiest part of the assignments as you just throw some bible verse down and most of the time take it out of context."  "It’s really not bad though, as it’s an easy way to help meet your word count requirements when you’ve run out of other relevant things to say."

You can Google stuff pretty easily, and there are plenty of atheists that go to Liberty University.

Normally, I only recommend LU if someone specifically wants a degree from a religious college or they are looking for a very specific major that is hard to find elsewhere, such as Physics.

You'll find different accounts of what it's like to go to Liberty because some instructors follow the rules while others don't. One guy who used to participate in these distance education discussion boards used to say that he didn't have to quote the Bible in any of his courses. The general consensus is that this is not true. However, some people have had instructors who didn't deduct points for not quoting the Bible even though they should have. In short, you don't know what your requirements will be until you get a feel of how the instructor grades. 

I do not recommend Liberty for physics, geology, or biology because their reputation for following Young Earth Creationism makes other scientists question the quality of education in those fields.

Liberty is not perfect but it has a lot to offer, especially when compared to other large online universities. Liberty has a massive, 7200 acres, and gorgeous campus. Liberty only accepts around half of applicants to their residential program. This makes your online degree appear more credible. Not hugely impressive until you compare that to the near 100% acceptance rate of competing huge online colleges.

Liberty is the only university I know that will allow you to stack discounts. For example, the 15% discount for Sophia students stacks with the 25% First Responder discount. There is one organization you can join for $80/yr to get the 25% discount without holding employment as a First Responder. I have not fully explored corporate discounts but they have a ton.
For those interested in religious courses, their Wilmington School of the Bible courses are incredibly cheap and flexible. One of the cheapest RA bachelor's degrees available in the USA. For those naysayers who condemn Liberty for being a Christian university, I say they are very upfront about being a Christian university. Contrast that with many public and private universities that cram their political ideology done the throats of their students without advance disclosure of bias.

I think it's well-known that Liberty Online accepts everyone who meets the minimum requirements.

Not all Christian universities are like Liberty. I think it's disingenuous to say that you know what you're getting into when you enroll at a Christian university. Not all Christian universities teach Young Earth Creationism, and not all Christian universities require students to quote the Bible in secular courses.

At a more mainstream university, you don't really know what your professor's politics are going to be or whether they'll incorporate their politics in their teaching because your professor will have academic freedom. At Liberty, professors are required to teach how Liberty wants them to teach. Some professors take a job with Liberty out of desperation, even though they fundamentally disagree with the school.

In addition to Young Earth Creationism, Liberty's poor reputation comes from the Falwell family's dysfunction and hypocrisy (pool boys, addiction, hidden homosexuality, and racism), being heavily involved in politics at the organizational level, not charging rapists and punishing rape victims, illegally engaging in for-profit activities as a non-profit organization, and firing whistleblowers for reporting Liberty's failure to investigate rape reports.
