Major Question: From a psycho-physiological perspective, is the act of a person smoking cigarettes on a regular basis a habit, or an addiction?
An answer for the major question was obtained by answering the following sub- questions:
Sub-Questions:
1. How are the terms 'habit' and 'addiction' individually defined and contrasted / compared?
2. What other dynamics play a role in making this determination, and can said dynamics be categorized separately?
3. What can this researcher's direct, professional experience contribute to the record?
You need to think about what type of data you will collect to answer each sub-question and if the data from the 3 questions combined will answer your major question. I think the sub-questions you have are going to give you problems when you start collecting data.
If sub-question 1 more simply asks about the difference between habit and addiction you can collect expert (psy-phys) definitions and differences as your data. To answer another sub-question maybe you could show the definitions to some regular smokers and ask them if based on the definition their smoking is a habit or an addiction. I lean towards leaving the researcher's experience out of it because that would show a strong bias. Instead, come up with another question you can collect data on that helps answer your major question. Maybe something on how addiction differs in different perspectives- or maybe that is better info to include in the background section of chapter 1.
If in the definitions there is time/frequency associated with the terms then you could add in questions to your survey to give you more data to represent about your survey group.
Then coming back to chapter 2, find a couple research studies on cigarette addiction and maybe more info on psycho-physiological perspective vs. whatever other perspective there is. You don't want to answer your sub-questions in chapter 2 but rather find out what other researchers are asking and finding on the same topic. Add in some research about what constitutes addiction and maybe how individuals label their own addiction. Because in chapter 5 you have to come back and say that your data was similar to different than the findings of other research in the field. So think about what type of research would be helpful to refer back to and include that in chapter 2. There may also be some info you can pull from books on quitting smoking.

This is *hugely* helpful. Thank you so much! That gives me a solid idea of how I can make my premise work, while altering it in a way that will keep me from hitting more roadblocks and freaking out.

Thanks!!
On average, about 2 hours per week, but I had the advantage of choosing a topic within my profession, so I was able to skip a healthy amount of time that otherwise might have been spent familiarizing myself with my topic.
My opinion is that committing to work on it for 30-60 minutes a day, 5 days a week is more than enough time to produce an excellent paper.

Ah, lucky. I don't really feel like I know a great deal about any one topic to do a research paper on it...
I have no idea what I am going to pick for mine and this seems pretty daunting.
