Laurentian University

We don't talk about this Canadian school at all.  I don't know that they have any significant online programming but guess what?  They're bankrupt!

“The Auditor General’s preliminary report on Laurentian was clear, it was not faculty who caused the crisis, it was bad management decisions,” said OCUFA President Sue Wurtele. “The provincial government also has to answer for its part in this crisis. They could have stopped this process from going forward but intervened too late after nearly 200 faculty and staff positions were lost, 69 programs cancelled, and countless lives ruined. The community deserves an explanation for why they allowed this to happen.”

Yes, they don't have many online programs if any at all; basically it was a disaster, they had a poor leadership and management team that just "spent" money and not directing or trying to operate the university as it should or properly.  I really would blame the upper management team and the provincial government for not stepping in.  After all that, Ontario now has a new independent medical school and a few new universities as the federated schools had to terminate their agreements!  Link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laurentian_University

Yes - this was going on for a while. Laurentian first announced its insolvency in 2021. Right - new buildings and overspending got them into this.

Some good info on how NOT to run a University here: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/sudbury/l...-1.6418503#

Kind of weird for a public university to declare bankruptcy.

An analogy is how a U.S. municipality or quasi-municipal body, including a school district or community college, can declare bankruptcy or enter bankruptcy protection, and a few have. City College of San Francisco was approaching bankruptcy circa 2012-14 and its accreditation was threatened but it was rescued but was rescued.

The Ontario government appoints most of the members to public university boards and has huge power of the purse in funding public universities, but within those constraints they govern themselves somewhat like private non-profits.

I'm a former Ontarian and have missed this saga. The Ford regime was hostile towards education at all levels from the beginning,  so no wonder.

If Orange County, or the City of Detroit  can do it, what's to stop a University?

Ford himself is a dropout from Community College. Maybe that's why he's hostile -maybe not. He said he dropped out because the lectures were too boring. The Globe and Mail reported that in the seven years up to 1986, when Doug Ford turned 22, he was known to have found money-making opportunities, supplying drug dealers.

You may have gathered, Stanislav, that I don't like this guy. You're right. And it's for keeps.
