Wow, those are my thoughts, exactly. Proper nouns and titles are capitalized; others are lowercase, and that shouldn't change just because someone, somewhere thinks it's a good idea.

Note the difference below.

"I worship God."
"Which god do you worship?"

"All rise, King Shotojuku is here!"
"Shotojuku is the king."

"You are a good soldier."
"Nice work, Soldier."

As the link Shoto posted to that blog states the capitalization of Soldier is an Army directive and has no bearing on the civilian population. The other services have similar guidance and respect the titles given in other services.

It is an element of Military culture and I don't mind if non-Military types don't understand and see it as a bit silly.
