Here is a great site for looking up authors or specific works of literature.
Study Guides & Literature Essays | Guides & Notes for Books, Movies, Poetry & Plays | GradeSaver
It has...
Brief biographies of authors.
Brief summaries of specific works. (you can learn what the plot of many works are without having to spend a lot of time reading actual works)
Summary AND analysis of chapters (this is great for learning to analyze)
Quizzes on specific works (the 1st one is free, but you need a membership to access the other quizzes).
Theme of the work
And other stuff I haven't looked into
This has been my main resource as I study for American Literature and Analyze & Interpret Literature. I'm taking these two tests over the next two days. I was going to wait and see how these tests go before I suggested this site, but I've found this site so helpful that I thought I should share it.
When I looked up the sample questions on CLEP's site I got %100 right (all right, 1 was a guess).

I'm not saying that site doesn't have good content, but my red-flag-meter is raised a bit over there. I'm pretty sure the purpose of the site is to buy and sell essays for the purpose of plagiarism.

You might be right about that. I haven't liked the sound of the 'buy your essays' stuff. I just use the free summaries, biographies, and such.

I tried to find the Idiot's Guide but couldn't get it for free. Before I bought the guide a family member stumbled onto gradesaver's site. So far I've only payed for 2 books ($70 total), IC, and my library card ($80 a year). Sooo, I didn't get the Idiot's Guide.
I did get Norton's anthology from the library; just to find out it's a 4 volume collection!
