I am scheduled to take Sociology CLEP Oct 17. Since I have enough time, I was wondering if I should go for the Social Sciences & History exam instead? I know there is a lot more info to study. But doesn't that mean the exam isn't as in depth as taking Sociology and History separately? My company is paying for all the CLEP's I take since the qualify for college credit (via educational reimbursement).
Also, would you all suggest taking as many CLEP's as possible rather than taking the same course in Straighterline or Aleks? Seems like CLEP is more widely accepted.
Thanks in advance.

Social Sciences & History covers more than just Sociology and History. Here is the complete breakdown according to the exam description:
History 40% (US History 17%, Western Civilization 15%, World History 8%)
Government/Political Science 13%
Geography 11%
Economics 10%
Psychology 10%
Sociology 10%
Anthropology 6%
Of course, the exam description offers a more detailed breakdown under each heading, but you can look that up for yourself.
If this is your first CLEP exam I would personally suggest just taking Sociology. Maybe you could build towards that Social Science/History exam by completing some of the subject exams that are contained within it first -- Psychology, US History, Western Civ, etc.

Thanks, This is my first CLEP. I guess since I am not paying for them, I'll just take one at a time rather than the combined.

I hate to be the devil's advocate here, but I think you may as well do social sciences and history. I'm Canadian, have minimal knowledge of american history, and know very little of the topics involved. I barely studied at all, and got 59. It's a shockingly easy test. I'd say just being somewhat knowledgeable of the world is enough to pass. I know i'm gonna get flamed for this, but I found it easy.
Also, if you fail, you can do the two separately. It would save a ton of time and money to just take a shot at the one exam.
Wow 3 edits. Since you're not paying for the exams, I would recommend it even more, just do a bit of studying (free-clep-prep) has some good resources.

This was my thought process too. I guess I will just keep studying sociology for a few days, and see how much retention I have. If I can retain the info I will study the other areas as well and go for the other exam.
Do you think the one exam was less in-depth but more broad? Seems like a combined exam, that has half the amount of questions then that of two exams would be easier. Assuming I could retain all of the subject long enough to pass the test. Like taking college math vs college algebra.
Thanks.

Social sciences and history was extremely broad, and not very deep. Like I said before, a decent knowledge of the covered topics from life experience, coupled with some targeted studying, should result in a pass. However, maybe that's rolling the dice a bit. Perhaps I got lucky and was asked on things I happened to know.

I just got back from taking Social Science & History. I didn't study either, but I took Petersons PT and Princeton Review's PT to gauge my level of readiness. However, I already took Psych, Socio, US Hist and all that stuff so that's why I didn't have to. I passed with a 69.
