Needing Advice!

Ok, well, I took the College Algebra back in Feb 29th and I didn't pass it because I didn't finish it/didn't pass it. I planned on retaking it but the dates do not match up with fall classes that need it as a prerequiste. (Classes start Aug 22, test would be earliest taken on August 30th, scheduling at the university would push the date to mid-September)

So....I was thinking of taking it online for the summer. I did have Algebra II in high school and did well all the way except at the end (again, I didn't finish that final in time and that was 3 hours, all fill in answers, but I did pass the final...barely!). It's not that I can't do it or that I don't get it, it's that I'm slow at it!

I need recommendations of online courses (not degree programs, I only need to take 1 course and transfer it in). University of Wisconsin-Madision is #38 in the country has a College Algebra course that fits my needs perfectly but I'm not sure if it will transfer in (I will check with my school today/tomorrow about this). There's also a nice local community college here that offers College Algebra 1314 online but has a longer program than most for this particular course. (This is my back-up plan)

Kaplan, & University of Phoenix is out. They didn't have any 1314 equivilents/didn't offer individual courses. Texas Tech and University of Texas also have 1314 online courses & will transfer out guaranteed but have stringent final % requirements. I'm looking for the final to be either an average of the midterm and final or just < 50% final.

So - has anyone ever taken Online courses from University of Wisconsin or has any recommendation of an online course elsewhere (if so, please mention in detail below)? Texas State and Sam Houston State University had 1314 online but are revising/removing the course from their online offerings. I called them both up for recommendations and they pointed me to each other! Just my luck! :p

I'm willing to consider anything, but I will not transfer into the online school (i.e. what excelsior & Kaplan does). I will be graduating from a very generous clep-awarding state university, so I don't need to do that. So I'm looking for an accreditted online college algebra course with no strings attached and a more than reasonable final % that I can do in 3-4 months.

Thomas Edison State College (regionally accredited) offers a 12 week online college algebra class. Thomas Edison State College


"(MAT-121) College Algebra - Provides an understanding of algebraic processes and practical applications. Advisory: It is advisable to have proficiency in MAT-115-GS Inter- mediate Algebra. Students are permitted to have scientific (nongraphing) calculators in exams. Programmable calculators are not permitted in exams. "

The professor for the July 2008 term is Boer, I had him. He's as straight forward as you get. I can't seem to copy and paste from the course essentials site at TESC, but the midterm is 30% and the final is 20%- your homework/discussions are the other 50%. Only the midterm is proctored, but it is OPEN BOOK.
Since you are not an enrolled student, the tuition is steep- $300/credit. Good Luck to you!


***edit- that won't work on the dates you need, sorry! I don't know if you failed the CLEP or DSST, but they both offer the exam. You could take the other one right now***

Might not be a bad idea to work through the ALEKS program as prep, and take the DSST exam in late July. Also, note that you're saying 3-4 months, but you really only have about two months -- it's already almost mid-June, and your classes that need the prereq start in mid-August, right? It's worth a try to talk to the instructors and try to get the prereq waived so you can start the class. If you can make a case that you are reasonably well-versed in the subject matter, and that you'll have the credits soon, you may get the instructor to let you in. (Excelsior let me register for Business Strategy when I had almost none of the prerequisite credit, because I convinced them -- actually, just told them -- that I'd have the prereqs finished while the course was still in its first few weeks.) That should let you take the community college course, which ought to be a pretty low-friction option.

Good news!

The university I will be graduating from (I'm transferring out) said they would take the University of Wisconsin credit as it should be credited - College Algebra. (We made them check their out of state books). I did get more information on other (future) math courses and that's where they started getting really picky. I'll have to watch my steps carefully! I did talk to them about the ALEKS thing and they weren't really willing to go along with it. i saw that this morning in the Charter Oak,etc section and pointed it out to my family. It sounds almost too good to be true, lol. I'm fine with an old-fashioned online course anyway ;D

So I enrolled today in College Algebra and we'll see how it goes.
I've already contacted the instructor asking for the PDF of the course guide and I've already downloaded the student handbook. I'll get all of my books and course materials (envelopes, cover sheets, instructions, etc) on Tuesday or Wednesday. Not a bad turn-around time considering it's coming from Wisconsin and I'm in Texas!

There's 12 lessons that are pretty simple - there's nothing I haven't covered before in the REA College Algebra CLEP book. Overall the course should cost me around $600-$750. The textbook was hard to track down so we found it on the pricey side. You can buy the solution manual, too - I did!

Yeah, I know I said 3-4 months. June, July, August is pushing on three months. I only have to finish it BEFORE or AROUND August 22nd & I'll be good to go.
I'll be moving on August 7th to the beach so I should be able to relax and get any loose ends done quickly. I do work fast on online courses - I can do a lesson in 1-2 days. The most I've sent out is 3 lessons a week, but that's not normal for me. One or two a week is usually my speed - in other words that's around 9 weeks, give or take.

This time I'm preparing more than Rambo does for battle, using a review guide from the specific info section of this site and the REA book. Oh yeah and about a 1100 flashcards...
