Inexpensive accredited Masters ideas
#1
Hi all.  I completed 50% of the MSCSIA at WGU and did not like it.  Self-paced was good since I have lots of Cyber Security experience.  The clunky study materials, no lectures and lack of direction were a turn off.  I enjoy studying paper books or ereader-compatible materials - they are linear and flow nicely.  I do really well with tests/quizzes.  I enjoy well-done lectures, especially when I can play at higher speeds.  Writing is harder so I prefer smaller papers (the TESU capstone was painful).  Self-paced is good if it meets most of the above parameters.  My interests are: MBA, MAOL or Organizational Psychology.  I have applied to Hellenic American's MBA but haven't made a final decision.  In the meantime, I'm doing a Udemy MBA overview class.  At age 55, I don't need any of these degrees but believe the work will build skillsets and help me in the job I just accepted.  My dream is semi-retirement in 5 years, moving to Europe and counsulting or teaching.  Going to Portugal in May to check it out :Smile I just started studying Portuguese - It's going well.
Thank you
PS - I am a veteran (only made E-4 rank though) but don't have GI Bill. Between that and working for the Commonwealth of Virginia, there may be a discount out there

I have a (younger) family member who is enrolled in the HAU MBA and is enjoying it, ROI should be great.  However, if you're looking for another option you might want to look at Amberton's MA Professional Development (https://www.amberton.edu/programs-and-co...index.html), you would be able to transfer in four of your courses that you've completed at WGU towards it, and you could have a certificate in 'Executive Leadership' (for example - https://www.amberton.edu/programs-and-co...index.html) as part of the program. That would leave you with a 'Master of Arts in Professional Development, Executive Leadership'.  I myself had started a few other master programs (one was even at WGU), they were just not a good fit, for various reasons. I too am of age/career point where I don't need a master, but I very much wanted one.

Interestingly, HAU's $3k MBA price is still being quoted on their main MBA page: https://mba.hauniv.edu/ and https://mba.hauniv.edu/academics/mba-program/ It's supposedly too late and is now $14,000 total, but it might be worth contacting them anyway.

Rachel83az - they said I could get the 3K rate if I start Monday.  Problem is I just got accepted and want references/formal transcripts.  Wish they had asked for the transcripts earlier.

Thanks for sharing your insights.  I find Amberton's requirements a little confusing.  It appears one has to take 24 credits with them X$900=$7200 (I fluffed this $45/class to cover books, technology fees, graduation or any other hidden costs).  Guess I need to set a limit so I'll say $5000.  That probably limits me to HAU :Smile I looked into Smart.ly/Quantic - they don't want old guys (can't make $ off).  I tried out ENEB and liked the reading but did not have the motivation to do the papers (plus not accredited) - good study source though.  Guessing Walden will be very similar to WGU (and I have not seen their free semester on Tempo for a while).

It's not unusual for transcripts to be sent to a school if you want to be accepted for a graduate degree. Were you waiting for the price before sending in transcripts?

They just recently answered all my questions.  I was under the (stupid) impression the application was all I had to do.  It was lengthier than WGU and included unofficial transcripts, job history, passport#, picture of my TESU degree, etc...  I may request the transcripts today

Ah, it's a shame that they weren't more clear regarding the entire process.

I would just request the transcripts be sent over, and the letters of recommendation when you get them (they don't need to be complicated).  It is likely they'll let you start this term (Monday is the official start as you mentioned) - they have been very good to work with based on my family members experience. The cost really can't be beat for a RA MBA, and the time will pass before you know it and you'll be done.

If you’ve been accepted, then I would take them up on their offer and start Monday and work out the minor paperwork details later.

I ordered the transcripts - honestly forgot how easy that was.  TESU was $15, WGU was $4.60 (both went straight to HAU's admissions team). Will write the cover letter tonight.  I've got one really solid recommendation letter but need to get another.  My dad and brother-in-law recently passed away (part of why I haven't messed with school in a while).  My kids lost a (their mom's side) grandfather and uncle<-- flew them to California for the funeral.  I'm in the middle of changing jobs and haven't physically seen coworkers in 2 years.  I'll find someone Smile  Does anyone else feel like their world has shrunk?
Anyway, Thank you all for the nudges (and possible alternatives).  Chances seem high that I'll start HAU next week but don't mind waiting another 9 weeks for the next semester
