How many introverts on this forum?
#1
The most annoying part of the application process for me is when employers ask for personal references. Can anyone in human resources tell me why employers want references that are not relatives, former or current employers, or former or current supervisors? I came across one application that wanted references from friends only. What is the difference between a friend and a relative giving a reference? How many other introverts do we have on this forum? I heard that introverts love participating in forums because they prefer asynchronous communication. Just in case anyone does not know, introversion and shyness are not synonymous. Introversion means that being in social situations is draining while extroverts are energized by socializing. Shyness is basically social anxiety and can be witnessed in introverts and extroverts.

Anyway, I haven't been at my current job that long and I have nothing in common with my coworkers. They like to drink and obsess over zombies. Please don't ask me to explain why most of them are obsessed with zombies. When I tried to use past coworkers for the job I have now, none of them would answer the phone. Maybe they called at the wrong time. My last job wasn't exactly one where you had your own office number or one where you could answer your cell phone in the middle of the day. We also worked unconventional hours.

I'm an extrovert. No wonder, I get a little frustrated with forums sometimes. Smile

Obsess over zombies. Lol! Well I guess they obviously don't have ambition, if that's all they can talk about. Smile

If you were to meet me one-on-one, you'd probably think that I was an extrovert. I am, however, socially awkward (really, laterbloomer, we'd never have guessed) and don't do well with groups. In addition, my intro/extroversion mix is situational. If I've been around a lot of people for a long time, I'd be happy just to go off into another room, and curl up in the fetal position. I haven't resorted to sucking my thumb, yet.

I voted for "In Between" because like laterbloomer said it depends on the situation. Sometimes I'm perfectly happy to stay home with a good book and never interact with anyone Wink, yet at others times I feel the need to have some interaction with people (whether it's meeting friends or just chatting with my family). If I had to pick one or the other, I'd say I lean more towards the introvert side of the scale. Big Grin

I could probably win a "who's the most introverted" contest. Been like that for 70 years. I socialize only with a small group who all have my last name. Smile I gave up Facebook because I got a bit bored, always seeing "Johann has 0 friends." Actually, I prefer things this way. No desire to change.

Forums, including this one, are a great vehicle for introverts - no personal contact, nothing at stake. Wonderful place, the Internet. Like they sang on Broadway:

"Something appealing,
Something appalling.
Something for EVERYONE
Our comedy, tonight."

(A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum - Stephen Sondheim, 1962)

I do have a few dozen "friends" on Facebook. They're mostly people I knew from high school and haven't seen for almost a decade. Yeah, I don't get Facebook either. It's boring.

Naturally an introvert but I come out of my shell on a regular basis, so I guess it makes me an in-betweener.
