I have been searching for a thread on this, so I am sorry if this has been discussed before.
I have applied to TESC and received my evaluation. I disagree with where they put one of my science courses. I have a Plant Biology course called Concepts of Plant Growth. They transcribed it as a Horticulture course and put it in free electives. I feel that this is a true Natural Science course-- not an applied science type course (or whatever they call it). I took it at a University and it is 4 credits with a lab and a required research project that we had to do. I was really counting on this to be considered a Natural Science course on my evaluation. Unfortunately, the University where I went no longer offers this course so I am not sure how I can prove the course description.
My question is twofold: 1) Does this sound like a Natural Science course or am I mistaken and way off on this? 2) How do you appeal this type of thing? any info would be greatly appreciated!!

My successful appeal(s) included the original course description with link from the originating school. Although the course isn't offered anymore a description of the original course likely exists. Can you try some google searches with the course and school name? There might be an old URL from a professor giving the course or an old school catalog. Another route might be to locate a course description for the exact course name at another school and give that a shot.
You then open a help ticket and address the BA adviser, likely Todd.
Good luck!

You can get a description of the course from an old catalog that should be available through the college counselor at that college. I had to do it with some of my courses. I asked them to fax the course description to my new college.
Also, if you have a syllabus or assignment list from the course it would be helpful.

thanks Geezer and GoodYellowDogs for your quick replies!! I took this course about 25 years ago so I am hoping they have this info archived at the University. It's worth a shot because I really would like to have this as a Natural Science course if possible. Thanks!

Mine was at least that long too... I think colleges have to keep that stuff forever. Good luck!

Very simple. Look on your transcript from the University. What is the alpha prefix? Is it BIO/BIOL/BIOLOGY? If so, you're golden because they made a mistake. If it is anything remotely close to horticulture/agri/floral - AGB, AGH, AGF, AGA, HTC, HOR, HRT, HCM, HSc, (you get the idea)..... then you're done- it's applied science period. No debate, move on.
The class is ALWAYS classified by the degree in which it would be applied against the department it was taught out of.

Thanks for the info! Well.... when I took the course it was the Plant Science Department so the prefix is PLSC. They have since changed the Department name and call it Plant Biology now --- which I think is more accurate. They probably changed it due to the confusion it caused :p The course was based heavily on science and research. They had a separate Horticulture program at the University so the courses were clearly divided at the time-- at least in my view Hopefully, I will get this to go in my favor.

What it's called now isn't relevant. They'll use PLSC. I'm not familiar with that major, but I hate to say I think it's not going to work. You could and should certainly ask for a reeval. As mentioned, talk to Todd Siben- he's a straight shooter.
Here is what they are going to be looking for. They want to know if:
horticulture students took this class (if yes, then maybe no)
bio majors could count this class as an elective (if no, then probably no)
If it were me, I'd fight hard that this was a botany/biology class. Botany is a word they know as a general natural biological science. "plant" is misleading them.

Thanks cook! I agree that the word Plant is what is throwing them off on this one. Horticulture students at the University where I went are in a 2 year program that was an "Applied Science" college within the University--they would probably not take this course but one that was more "applied" oriented. And yes, Biology and Botany majors were definitely able to take this as an elective. I will definitely get in touch with Todd and find out their reasoning behind their decision. All in all, I have been very happy with TESC--they took every credit I have ever earned so I can't complain too much

Good luck to you- I'm curious how this will turn out. Let us know!
