Hit a wall
#11
I too hit a wall when I got to my last class. I'm taking Business Policy at Adams State College. The wall was caused by two things, the material is boring and the course is split into only three multi-chapter lessons and a final project. I much preferred independent study at LSU with single chapter lessons. The multi-chapter lessons just seemed like too much work. Anyway, I have started slogging through it by making myself read 10 pages a night. I can usually get through that much before the material makes me too sleepy. So far, I've studied 150 pages out of 500 and I am almost finished with the first multi-chapter lesson. While this has definitely slowed down my progress, I am not going to give up especially since it is the final three credits I need for the bachelor's. Smile

My huge struggle is Statistics. So far I have let it keep me from other exams that I could pass because if I can't do the stat exam it will all be wasted. Penn-Foster is not an option for that requirement for me. Ugh, it's all Greek to me (actually, Greek is tough but nothing like statistics for me  )

I certainly don't want to set you in a new direction, but I took the written DANTES and had the following experience:

I did not know eveything going in...far from it.

I committed to learning Standard Deviation, Probability and Null/Alternate Hypothesis. These three made up 60-70 of the written test. I passed with a 61.

My rationale was that instead of stalling for three months trying to learn everything there is to know about Statistics....concentrate on the three or four areas that make up the lions share of the test, that will ensure a pass.

There is always the ECE Statistics test, that although it looks harder is an option if you don't pass the DANTES Statistics.

I will start studying for this when I finish up CSU ops management course, I dread it as well. Have you thought of taking a regular course at the local community college or maybe through one of the an online course I haven't taken any classes with BYU but they have statistics online. I don't know if anyone has gotten them approved to take either.

STAT 221 — Principles of Statistics
Prerequisite: MATH 110 (College Algebra) or equivalent skill.

Description

Stemplots, boxplots, histograms, scatterplots; central tendency, variability; confidence intervals and hypothesis testing involving one and two means and proportions; contingency tables, regression; computer package. 29 lessons, 23 Speedback assignments, 3 Speedback midcourse exams, 3 instructor-graded midcourse exams, Speedback final exam.

They also have a print bases psychological statistics if that is what you need.

If you go to EC you can use the course search and it does bring up other colleges that have courses that will satisfy your requirements as well.

Good luck studying and stick with it. As you can see I am nervous about this exam as well I already have the Penn Foster Stats course approved by EC in case I chicken out of the studying and dsst exam.

I've been there too and it's a tough place to be. I was all the way to starting to convince myself that it didn't really matter if I finished a degree or not.

What worked for me was to first of all remember how far I'd already come. I didn't want it to all be for nothing. Then I continued to study for just an hour a day on the subject that was bogging me down and spent the rest of my study time on an exam that was a lot more fun. I don't usually study for more than one at a time but this really helped to get through the slump. Sometimes I only worked on the tough one for half an hour but the point was to do 'something' on it every time I sat down to study and to do it first so I could get to the 'good stuff.' Eventually, wonder of wonders, I was ready to take the exam. So what if it took longer to get through than any other course I've attempted! It's done and I finished several other exams while slogging through it.

So please hang in there. Just do something each day and you WILL succeed. hilarious We are all rooting for you!

Hi Adnerbe see the post I wrote from another question maybe it could be of little help to you all the Best (see copied post below)

Just like you I not taken Math in about 10 years.
Since I am so bad in Math and just so afraid of it, I did not even try to test out of it.
I took the advice of people on the forum and registered with Pen Foster for Algebra. When my material came I read through two pages and got defeated.
For me a class was still not going to do a trick because I wanted much attention and one on one basis; above all flexibility and cost were major factors

I decided to get a private tutor.
Remember now Professor Private Tutors can be ridiculously expensive.
On the other hand if you can find another student for a example Majoring In Physics, Chemistry or Engineering; chances are they are very good in Math and are an Excellent source to Building your College Math skill and confident and can be affordable.
The best part is you can decided to meet at time that works best for both you for example mine comes to my home twice a week in the evenings (since I work full time) after which I drop her at her place when we are done. (Perfect for me).
Your sessions can only be up to the time you feel very comfortable and get the concepts or however much.
If you need more information let me know.
If you don't know where to start looking for a tutor you can to start looking at WyzAnt.com. Your One Stop Tutor Shop. then pick it up from there.
(Don’t be put off with the prices you get on the web most of these people’s prices are very negotiable)

So far this is working great for me I have only done it for few sessions, but I love it
Good Luck

I did this. Many times. I had a family and many hobbies. I would go to school and then stop. It seemed it would take me forever. THEN... I was laid-off. I spent several months looking for a job, the economy was in recession and things were tight. People I worked with that were nowhere near as motivated as me were getting interviews because they had a degree !!! I didn't have mine. I was scared. First thing I did was update my graduation agreement and go back to school. I needed 70+ credits to graduate. Today I'm one test from graduation. So, do it because you don't want to ever be in a position where you can't compete because of a STUPID PIECE OF PAPER !

hope that helps

never2late Wrote:Everyone is talking about Penn Foster Technical Math class for Algebra. . . .
Good luck.

I took an Intermediate Algebra class online from Barstow Community College in California. I can now take pretty much take any College Algebra class I want, and I'm leaning toward LSU's.

Barstow CC wasn't horribly expensive for me being a CA resident, and may be reasonable for others. The online classes are 9 weeks with two exams, so it moves quick. Homework is done online.

I may go back to them or some other local CC for the College Algebra course, but I'm not thrilled about having to wait until January to start-- thus the appeal of LSU.

Hi,

I am overwhelmed by all the support here....and you have changed my attitude!
I want a college degree and I will get my college degree.
I will do what it takes.I will look at the immediate picture which is to get through Algebra. I have a ton of options and will explore them.

I am taking the week-end off and going shopping.....what a cure!
Thanks so much everybody!
