Man, this place has changed in the last 10-15 years. The number of people chiming in to random threads is quite honestly, obnoxious. I posted basically this same thread in 2009 under my old username and got nothing but support, great advice and wisdom. I post it again in 2023 and I get 50% good replies with advice and help and 50% negative and unnecessary replies.

TAMUC is usually recommended for people who live in Texas. It's around twice as slow as UMPI in completing courses, which may affect your timeline.

However, if you feel TAMUC is good for you, then it's a great option.

Which lab science course should I take to fulfill UMPI’s requirements? Biology with lab from study.com or human biology with lab from Sophia? Which one is faster and/or easier? I really appreciate all your help and advice so far.

Excellent. I just applied at UMPI and added them to my FAFSA online form. Given the credits that I have listed above, do you have any idea, or know where I can find advice on which BA or BS program to apply to transfer into? Should I stay enrolled at TESU for the sake of perhaps a higher financial aid award, but then use TESU’s financial aid award to fund my YourPace session(s) and graduation fees at UMPI? I don’t have much money saved up at all to throw at my academic plan, so I am almost 100% dependent on federal financial aid. Thanks

UMPI YourPace offers BLS and BA degrees.

The BLS majors would make the most use of your previous credits since there is a large amount of free electives.

You can explore all the majors and choose the one that suits you best. Once you've selected a major, follow the degree plan.

UMPI charges $1500 per 2-month session. Most individuals can complete 10 courses in 2 sessions, and some can finish 10 courses in one session, provided they study at least 20-30 hours per week. 

Financial aid should easily cover all the costs.

Considering that you would have to take 10 classes at UMPI anyways, could you end up with a History degree with just a few more Sophia courses and CLEP exams? I think a mistake I’ve made in the past is thinking, “Ugh, I just have to get to 120 credits.” In comparing degree programs for myself now, what I’ve realized is that they’re intentionally built to provide not just breadth but also depth of knowledge. Just picking classes here and there is a mistake I’ve made in the past. Depending on which option I take, I’m going to end up leaving credits on the table. And I just need to be at peace with that, it’s a sunk cost fallacy to try to use them even if they don’t fit with what I want to do now. And even though law schools don’t require specific majors to attend, might someone in admissions who’s reviewing a transcript view more favorably one where a plan came together in the end?

It can make a difference in some of the more competitive law schools’ admissions departments but most law schools tend to look favorably on unorthodox applicants like adults, regardless of their undergraduate major. (Source: my brother, a lawyer who worked in the admissions office at UOP McGeorge School of Law. “Diversity is king.”). My original plan for many years was to earn as many credits as I could through alternative methods and then piece together a Spanish degree. That later changed to Liberal Studies or whatever could be earned the fastest. Then I had kids, began a wonderful career as a Court Interpreter and a commercial voice actor and my college plans faded away.

History would be a great major for both applying to law school as well as serving to fulfill a greater sense of personal accomplishment. My only questions is, can it be done within the timeframe I’ve plotted out? I’ll have to do some reading and research. Thanks for the helpful Wiki link. I just did the history degree in one term (not my first degree). It’s actually called a History and Pol Sci degree and you pick a concentration in either but not both.

In my opinion the poli sci track is what people always chime in about because frankly it’s much easier than the history classes. I already had quite a few grad history classes under my belt and felt UMPI wasn’t too difficult to get As. Decent amount of writing though (especially the HTY track classes).

If you maximize Sophia or have transfer credits and can write well (or have a good grasp of history beyond basic familiarity)  it can be done in one term.

Update: I just found my most recent TESU transcript from last year after they stripped me of my FEMA credits and a few other courses that they had previously allowed to transfer in (back in 2009). Hope this helps anyone who is trying to figure out a degree plan at UMPI for me. Which lab science course should I take to fulfill UMPI’s requirements? Biology with lab from study.com or human biology with lab from Sophia? Which one is faster and/or easier? I really appreciate all your help and advice so far.

Biology at Sophia is easier but in my opinion both are pretty easy/superficial when compared to average college standards.

I was a prior undergrad Bio and anatomy TA.

15 years ago I was a freshman sitting in a BM college class haha. Can’t speak for everyone but the mods have the patience of saints. Lots of questions daily from people who obviously have done 0 research or have ridiculous expectations. This wears on some after a while.
