Helping daughter with degree plan. Is my line of thinking correct?

Hello all, this is my first post and I want to first thank everyone who has contributed to this site. There is a wealth of information to absorb here.

I am trying to assist my daughter find a degree completion program for a BSBA in Business Administration.I saw the degree completion program for the SNHU business degree and wanted to see if my line of thinking is correct and I am on the right track.

Daughter is 24 years old, working full time and has the evenings and weekends for coursework. There will be no financial aid available so she will be paying out of pocket.
She currently has 62 transfer credits from a Virginia Community College completed Associate’s degree. All courses listed below are 3 credits with the exception of the science courses which were 4 cr.

So I guess to maximize transfer credit to SNHU if she decides on this program we should look for 28 more transferable courses from sites such as Sophia and study.com to reach 90 transfer cr.

We will also look at other degree plans as well. Also Once a program is decided on we have to obviously apply and see how the credits transfer and take it from there. I just wanted to see if my line of thinking is correct.

Any reason for SNHU? UMPI has a BABA and will accept 90 transfer credits including RA credit and ACE credit. Tuition is significantly less as well. We have degree plans on here for UMPI.

Thank you for the information. No particular reason for SNHU. I just saw that particular plan and was looking into it. All courses were taken between 2017-2019 and all were either A or B grades with the exception of business law which was an C. I appreciate the link for UMPI. I will definitely check that out.  I also have to become familiar with sites such as Sophia and study.com and others. This is fairly new to me. I received all my education at brick and mortar universities so I am trying to read up on all ways to earn transfer credits to save money.

Really valuable informative on this site! I am grateful for the information available as I work through this.

@Dooj, Welcome to the board... It's great seeing a parent try and help get their daughter obtain a Bachelors... The info you have currently is pretty detailed but still missing a few variables that I usually would like to get more info on.  Just above your new thread, you'll notice the Template/Addendum here: https://www.degreeforum.net/mybb/Thread-...Area-works

For now, with the details you have provided, I would recommend UMPI BLS (Liberal Studies) with a minor of her choice, such as Management, Project Management, or MIS.  If she would like to get a BABA (Business Admin), there are 5 concentrations to select from.  It really won't matter which she selects as it will get her in the door for many non competitive MBA or Masters.

It really depends on the student, if she's not into competency based degree programs due to some reason or another, she can try an Excelsior, TESU, or SNHU degree instead.  With a better overview and fuller picture of what she's looking for and her study habits, it'll be easier for us to provide a solid recommendation!  Good luck, have fun, looking forward to more details...

My vote is UMPI for cost (CBE program) or TESU if she doesn't want CBE.

SNHU is too expensive IMHO, when you want a simple business degree that can be gotten easily at either of these places.

@bjcheung77 thank you for the welcome and the information. I will provide more information below regarding my daughter’s educational ambitions. I have also added the grades to the classes and will update the template information.

Location: Richmond, Virginia
Age:24
Kind of degree: Business Administration (Maybe management or leadership focus)
Current Regional credits: 62 transferrable credits from the Virginia Community College System. Credits were earned from 2017-2019.
Credits from ACE/CLEP/NCES: None currently
Military experience: None
Certifications: None
Financial Aid: None-will pay as we go, her mother and I will help with tuition where we can. She has about $5k saved id need to be used .
Tuition Reimbursement: None at this time.
Commitments: Nothing other than full time job and taking care of pets. Can  study most weeknights and weekends.

I am not familiar with competency based educational programs. I did my BSBA, and MBA traditionally at campus full and part time over twenty years ago. A lot has changed and for the better. You can believe if a format of online education was available to me back when I was in college, I would have jumped at the opportunity!

We will look at the UMPI Yourpace program and see if that is an option. If she can complete three courses in 8 weeks that is an option.

Also thinking about additional courses she can take via Sophia and Study.com to maximize transfer credit.

Most students here are able to finish 10-15 classes at UMPI in 2-3 sessions. It's very, very important to transfer in a foreign language, a physical science, and a biological science (one of the sciences must have a lab). UMPI offers these classes, but they're (almost) impossible to complete quickly and with a good grade. The other UMPI classes are all graded based on a final paper or project. Maybe an exam or two, but they're working on eliminating those. If she is comfortable writing academic papers, UMPI will be the cheapest for her.

The path of least resistance (quick and easy to plan out) and cost (lowest) for your daughter would be the business administration (BABS) at UMPI. Even if she takes 3 sessions (many reported here complete in 2) it will be a lower cost than TESU. I would not recommend the BLS at her young age; her professional experience doesn't have enough years on the resume/VS to settle for a liberal studies (check the box) degree, and you already stated she wants a business degree (not 'any degree').

I would also suggest that you try to convince her to register here and participate in the discussion. A lot of the decision making has to do with ability, motivation, time available, testing vs writing, career goals, etc... In the end, she will have to own and understand the process.

Great information here @rachel83az! Taking a language is not a problem. May have to take another science unless UMPI accepts environmental science as a physical science. I will have to look closely at the UPMI degree plan on this site. Thank you for your response!
