Help with UMPI Degree Plan
#1
Your Location: Alberta, Canada
Your Age: 34
What kind of degree do you want?: BA in History and Political Science (Concentration in Political Science) from UMPI, with minor in Management
Current Regional Accredited Credits: 30

Athabasca University: 30 credits total (University Certificate in Public Administration)
LGST 230 (Canadian Legal System), 3, A+
ENGL 255 (Introductory Composition), 3, B+
INST 203 (Indigenous Studies I), 3, A-
GOVN 301 (The Public Sector & Corporate Power), 3, A+
GOVN 390 (Public Policy & Administrative Governance), 3, A-
ADMN 232 (Introduction to Management), 3, A
CMNS 202 (Media and Power in Canadian Society), 3, A
LGST 331 (Administrative Law), 3, B+
POLI 277 (Introduction to Political Science I), 3, A-
COMP 210 (Introduction to Information Systems & Computer Applications), 3, A+

Current ACE, CLEP, or NCCRS Credits: 10

Sophia: 10 credits total
Ancient Greek Philosophers, 3, 98%
Art History I, 3, 96%
Developing Effective Teams, 1, 96%
U.S. History I, 3, 97%

Any certifications or military experience? No.
Budget: $5,000 CDN (~ $3,500 USD)
Commitments: Full-time job, three children, and one taskmaster/wife
Dedicated time to study: 20-30 hours per week
Timeline: By the end of 2025 ideally
Tuition assistance/reimbursement: Possibility through work, but unsure how much exactly they will cover. I'm going on the assumption they will cover zero.

Further information: I completed my University Certificate in Public Administration from Athabasca University earlier this week. I would like to now earn a bachelor's degree from the University of Maine at Presque Isle in History and Political Science, with a concentration in Political Science, and a minor in Management. I believe I understand which courses I should take through Sophia and Study.com before transferring into UMPI to maximize the 90 credit transfer. However, I do have some questions below, please and thank you!

Questions:
1. If I take U.S. Government from Sophia, does this cover both the requirement in the political science major (POS 101: American Government) and the 5E requirement in the general education requirements? Or would I have to take another course to fulfill the 5E general education requirement?
2. Is it possible to have UMPI assess my transfer credits from Athabasca University to see what courses and requirements they fulfill, and then complete any Sophia/Study.com courses needed to fill in the gaps before starting the courses at UMPI? The reason I am asking is that many of the Athabasca University courses are not in UMPI's transfer database, and some of them may fulfill some of the general education/major/minor requirements without me having to take another course. For example, I think the INST 203 (Indigenous Studies I) course I completed at Athabasca University may fulfill the 5A general education requirement.
3. Somewhat related to question #2, if some of my Athabasca University credits transfer in as upper level political science credits, would that waive some of the political science major course requirements for the degree? Or are the courses listed for the political science major on YourPace's website rigid and must be completed as stated?

Thank you!

Hello! So I'm going to start off with suggesting you create a spreadsheet that lays out everything you need to complete your degree and will be your roadmap for finishing your program. That way you can keep it up to date and stay organized.

1. Sophia U.S. Government will transfer in as POS101, which will cover both the major requirement and the GEC requirement.

2. You'll want to reference the U of Maine transfer equivalency tool to determine what credits from Athabasca will transfer in for specific courses. In my experience, if its not available on the transfer tool, it goes in as general elective. However, once you get admitted and get your transfer audit done, you can continue to transfer in other forms of credit with permission. You are not required to enroll in classes immediately and can spend the time you need doing Sophia courses. However, doing your best to create an accurate spreadsheet will help minimize the amount of extra work you are doing and the time it takes you to complete your degree.

3. If certain classes transfer in as UL POS classes, they will count towards satisfying your major requirement. However, you must keep in mind the residency requirement at UMPI.

Hopefully that helps!

Welcome to the board, yes, do create a spreadsheet with the info from the WIKI plan, this will allow you to picture where each course goes and what they may transfer in as. I would use it for reference and tracking purposes, you can apply to UMPI and get an evaluation to see where you stand and update the spreadsheet then... You may want to link us to the spreadsheet, as a viewable (not editable file) stored in your Google or One drive... We can comment on recommendations!

As others have suggested, you could create a spreadsheet. What I would recommend however is to simply just transfer what you have at UMPI and let them create a spreadsheet for you of what you need. This is what is called a "degree plan/map". I've interviewed before to be an academic advisor for UMPI's YourPace before as I really enjoy doing this stuff.

Once you submitted your stuff and they (UMPI) creates a degree plan/map of whatever courses you need to complete, do the rest at Sophia, Study.com, or Coursera until you hit the 90 credits needed and do the rest at UMPI. Then you'll know what transfers in and what you need to take. Shouldn't take very long really to know what you'll need. I have a feeling you wont have any issues transferring in those credits from Athabasca U as some may apply directly or as electives (I've tried applying to Athabasca in the past, but I already had a Bachelors so I couldn't transfer my 30+UL credits there to complete the "free Bachelor's" as they were from UMPI).
