Help! Living in Mexico!
#1
Please excuse my ignorance! My 19 year old stepson recently moved in with us in Mexico. He would like to get an Associates in Computers (undecided on Computer Science or Information Technology) and a couple certifications to start working as soon as possible. I do not have a background in computers so I can not guide him properly. I have checked out Charter Oaks, TESU, and Excelsior degree options. I have also checked out StraighterLine, studydotcom, and the testes available with TESU. It is so overwhelming. Where do you start? How long will it take if he is motivated? What’s a cheapest route?

The closest thing Excelsior has to what your son wants is an Associate of Applied Science in Technical Studies with a concentration in Computer Technologies. Charter Oak State College only has associate's degrees in general studies and early childhood education. TESU has associate's degrees in applied computer studies, computer and information technology, and computer science.

So, out of those three schools, TESU is pretty much the only option.

I think you meant Study.com in place of duplicating the SL/Straighterline.

As usual, the issue with getting an associate's from TESU is that you have to pay the same $2200 residency waiver fee that you do for a bachelor's, which makes it quite expensive.
NanoDegree: Intro to Self-Driving Cars (2019)
Coursera: Stanford Machine Learning (2019)
TESU: BA in Comp Sci (2016)
TECEP:Env Ethics (2015); TESU PLA:Software Eng, Computer Arch, C++, Advanced C++, Data Struct (2015); TESU Courses:Capstone, Database Mngmnt Sys, Op Sys, Artificial Intel, Discrete Math, Intro to Portfolio Dev, Intro PLA (2014-16); DSST:Anthro, Pers Fin, Astronomy (2014); CLEP:Intro to Soc (2014); Saylor.org:Intro to Computers (2014); CC: 69 units (1980-88)

And the Cornerstone for $300 (and that is the cheap option available only until June 3, 2019: https://www.degreeforum.net/mybb/Thread-...ornerstone).

Graduation fee apply to all (and all schools have one) TESU is currently $332

Since the Associate Level is all LL requirements - TECEPs could be a cost effective way to earn some of the credits ($25x3=$75 per LL exam) https://www.tesu.edu/degree-completion/testing

These fees we're talking about are set costs.  Getting the credits many low &/or free options for them.

The residency waiver for $2200 is the rate with the Study.com discount - so he'd need at least a course or two through them ($199 covers two exams, or two courses)

At 19 I think University of the People will be the best option.
