Health Insurance
#1
Is it allowed for a school to force you to use their insurance plan? I was charged $999 from my grad school for health insurance. When I called them up, they said I can waive it and then if they see that their insurance is better than mine, they told me I'll need to pay for it. I told them I'm on my mom's plan and I don't want their insurance but it didn't help. Are they allowed to force me on to their plan?

Sounds like you need to make a call to the Insurance Commissioner for the state you live in to find out what their have to say.

In Florida, this is not allowed. If you are in classes that require insurance (health related courses mandate proof of insurance and/or accident insurance for times when you are travelling to and from clinical/internship sites, but it is at a cost of under $35 or $40 a year.

Don't accept it without a fight.

I guess it might be the state where the school is located that would control this, but not sure of that. Would call them both - that is, if the school is not located in the state where you live.

USF requires all foreigners to purchase their health insurance plan if they do not already have one. They do not require US citizens to do so, however. It is also pretty cheap like yours though.

I sort of like the idea of requiring people to purchase health insurance if they want to attend a university as long as the costs are cheap like yours.

Of course it is unconstitutional but that did not stop Obama from writing legislation that forces people to purchase health insurance. The problem with his law is that it will make those low cost plans illegal and you will end up paying 5k instead of 2k at your age.
