Heads up: Residency Waiver Fees MAY go up July 1st

I'm taking another look at TESU costs. Correct me if I'm wrong but it actually looks like it's a bit cheaper to forget about the SDC discount & just go with the flat-rate tuition - taking at least 16 credits @ TESU to avoid residency waiver fee.

SDC Partnership Discount/ TESU Per Credit Tuition (6 credits @ TESU): $50 application fee + $2,800 residency waiver + $298 graduation fee + $2,274 (cost for 2 courses) = $5,422

No SDC Partnership Discount/ TESU Flat Rate Tuition: (16 credits @ TESU): $50 application fee + $4,928 flat rate tuition + $298 graduation fee = $5,276.

Maybe I just realized most people oppose the flat-rate tuition because you need to take so many courses in about 3 months.

It is cheaper if you take enough credits. The SDC per-credit breakeven is at about 13 credits, so you can save $1136 by taking 16 credits (maximum per-term amount before overload) on the flat rate plan. That's what I did in my degree plan.

TESU also recently dropped the credit cutoff for entering the flat-rate plan to nine credits instead of ten, so it's easier to qualify.

Be careful if you have an affiliation code on your student profile (corporate choice, Study.com, etc), it will count as per-credit pricing instead of switching to the flat-rate plan.

I wouldn't recommend doing this unless you're very confident about what you can achieve. 16 credits in the same 12-week term is a lot of work. You can make this a little easier on yourself by taking e-Packs, but you're still committing to at least four or five classes at once.

"The University will keep rates unchanged for part-time New Jersey students, graduate, military and most nursing students.

The threshold, which was previously at least 10 credits, has been lowered to at least 9 credits to be considered full time. The full-time rate will be reduced from $3,963 to $3,579 for in-state students."

so is "being considered full time" the same thing as meeting the requirement for the flat tuition rate ?

I agree, not enough of a difference in cost. A 16 credit workload means not much of a life outside is school.

Just for a little under 3 months!

I know it can seem like a long time when you're doing it. (I feel like 8 weeks seems long!)

You actually have to compare apples-to-apples when comparing costs between schools.  You have to look at how many credits you can bring in, and then the total cost to take courses at the school plus any fees.  At COSC, there are per-term fees and you have to go at least 2 terms, and there's going to be an extra fee for some to take that lab science; and let's not forget they're adding the RA credits requirement which will be hard for some to get.  At EC, there is an Enrollment fee, unless you take 12cr there.

Right now, the costs for each school bringing in the max credits:

COSC $2,848
EC $5,300
TESU $5,814

this may be a silly question because maybe Im missing something but if I remember correctly, you can take a federal student loan out for up to 10K? I remember using some of my stafford loan to pay rent when I was renting an apartment to attend a certain college nearby? so what am I missing? how do they know if youre using some of that money to pay the residency waiver fee? dont they just cut you a check for the amount you took out on the loan?

Application Fee: $50
6 credits (509x6) out of state: 3054
Graduation Fee: 298
Wavier Fee: 3192

6594 cost of degree. This assumes that the student does not live in NJ. Also does not include the cost of 114 credits plus transcript fees. When it is also said and done probably closer to 7 or 8k for a degree.


Comparing 6 credits at TESU vs 16 in one term.

Wavier Fee + 6 credits = 6246

16 credits in one term = 4928

1318 savings!!

But that also doesn't take in mind any financial aid. But also doesn't take into consideration that there is a ton of stress and work of doing 16 credits in one term.

Also, I wonder if TESU will ever change the 16 credit wavier to 15 it would make sense. The only reason they had it at 16 was the 1 credit cornerstone which doesn't exist.

2 Questions...

I didn't see this addressed. Background: I applied to TESU and was accepted last week. I also took 2 SDC courses and am waiting on the final to be graded. 

Question 1: Do I have to be officially enrolled by July 1st or just have SDC transcripts sent over by then?
Question 2: Which catalog will I be locked in to if I enroll after July 1st? (Don't know if there's any upcoming changes, but just wondering)
