Has anyone recently enrolled at COSC?

Hi all, 

I’ve been lurking for awhile and finally joined this forum. Like the title says, has anyone recently enrolled at COSC? I know it’s no longer a top college for degree hacking, but I’m just curious if anyone has recently enrolled and is currently taking classes. I wonder what their transfer of credits is like for 2025.

Just to kinda bump this thread. I am fully aware that COSC isn’t transfer friendly like they used to be, but someone from admissions has texted me on and off. From what I gather, you can still transfer in all and any classes from Sophia or Study.com. I am genuinely interested in their Business Administration for General Business. A lot of business degrees from the top unis in this forum require a concentration and that’s not something I’m interested in. Hence, why COSC is for now a top choice for me and not TESU, UMPI, or others.

COSC requires upper-level courses, which may be hard to obtain if you do not get them at another regionally accredited institute or complete them at COSC. If you plan on degree hacking and getting the most bang for your buck, TESU, WGU, UMPI, Excelsior, and University of the People would be your best bet. I know you don't want to concentrate on this, but finding a general business program that accepts alternative credits will be challenging. One option might be Excelsior University's Bachelor of Science in Business, although it's not business administration, as they accept up to 113 transfer credits.

So it’s not so much about COSC’s number of credit they allow to transfer in, but more of its them limiting the amount of upper level classes to transfer in? I know their Sophia Learning and Study.com pages are very vague. That is why I asked has anyone in the last year or recently applied to COSC and got an evaluation done.

Even if it doesn’t explicitly say if COSC will reject ACE Accredited upper level classes, I was hoping someone had the most recent info regarding transfer credits. I am sort of looking to hack a degree, but if I can max out COSC’s limit, I don’t mind taking a few UL classes there.

I don't think anyone from DegreeForum has enrolled in some time. They were very similar in terms of paths, requirements and costs to Thomas Edison. Once Thomas Edison changed from College to University, making it read better on a resume and COSC greatly reduced the sources they would accept credit from, COSC really fell out of favor between the two. The COSC dedicated board has become a ghost town. I was enrolled before all the major changes and can't be of much help to students who enroll under their programs as they exist now. The vast majority of what I was able to transfer is no longer accepted, so I can't offer much insight anymore.

If you plan on degree hacking and getting the most bang for your buck, TESU, WGU, UMPI, Excelsior, and University of the People would be your best bet.

Excelsior is out too. They require five classes to be taken with them now. and they're not cheap. COSC may actually be a better option than Excelsior now, given that their tuition is the same low-ish price for out-of-state students, which is comparable to SNHU. However, SNHU beats them easily with a much wider array of degree options. And all the other schools you mentioned will likely win on cost, speed, and flexibility.

Although Charter Oak still allows students to transfer in up to 114 out of 120 credits needed for a degree, changes in 2022 made it nearly impossible to obtain a degree via alternate means. COSC students are required to have at least 30 upper level credits to complete a degree. However, they no longer accept most sources of alternate credit that do provide upper level credits. They do accept Study.com credits, but only 3 of these (9 credits) are upper level.

Students who already have 21+ UL credits from somewhere, such as from duel enrollment during high school, may be able to obtain a COSC degree. Otherwise, students are advised to consider a different degree-granting institution.

Hi all thank you for the replies. Charter Oak State College will just be at the bottom of my list for now. It’s a shame that it’s harder to transfer in credits now.

I just signed up to attend an Open House with Charter Oak State College. Hopefully, they have a Q and A on alternative coursework. I might consider setting up a meeting with an advisor too. Just to see what the latest information is.

Do you have a good chunk of existing credits from regionally-accredited college(s)? If so, COSC could be doable. If you're staring from scratch, I think it'll be quite an uphill battle. 

Overall, I think trying to scrap together enough classes from here and there to get around all the restrictions might be the same amount of work and ultimately end up being more total money than just doing a concentration in another school. 

How important is moving quickly? If you've got all the time and don't mind moving slow, you could use ASU's Universal Learner courses to hit the requried number of Upper Level (UL) credits... I think their Project Management classes could fill out pretty well and be relevant to your eventual degree.
