HONEST OPINION-American & English Lit
#1
I am getting ready to prepare to take my first CLEP this summer. I need 2-200level English classes left to graduate with an AA from a community college. Stupidly I left those for last, HAHA. SO honestly, someone who HATES fiction of any type can I pass these? I can't read Shakespeare or any of that other stuff. I get bored immediately and I read the same paragraph over and over and retain NOTHING.

Are these tests really difficult?
Which one to take first?
How long will I need to study, and what to use to study?
Am I making a mistake making these my first CLEP's??

I got an A in both Eng 101 and 102, but I am a good writer and that's what helped my grades. However, I think these tests are going to be alot different.

I also plan to take Spanish, but that should be a breeze for me I HOPE!

Thank you SO much, I LOVE this forum. You guys have really helped me find hope in FINALLY getting my BS or BA and FAST> If some of you recall my first posts, I have been stuck at my community college for 4 years and drowning in student loan debt!

I took/passed A&I Lit a couple of years ago.

"Difficult" of course is quite subjective, however with enough study and good materials (Idiots Guide)you can and will pass this exam - Good Luck!

Get a copy of the idiots guide to american literature that is what I used. To be honest this didn't take much prep for me as I read constantly. There are some websites referenced in the specific exam feedback as well you can use. The exam is doable if you refresh yourself on american literature. Know the different phases and the big names (Mark Twain, Walt Whitman, Thoreau, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Emily Dickinson, Carol Sandberg), I added to the specific exam feedback shortly after I took the exam. I believe I had an Amy Tan and Norman Mailer question as well. Know who was credited with having her novel trigger the civil war, first published women, first published african american, items like that were on the exam.

Check with your college, you might earn 6 credit EACH for these, meaning you would only have to take 1, not 2!!! TESC gave me 6 - 200 level credits for American Lit.

Honestly, you won't have to read much. This will be fact type exam- who wrote this or that, which period was this, who was the main character, etc. You can memorize this info, I did.

Are these tests really difficult?>>

Since you hate Shakespeare, don't take the Brit lit- take the American.

Which one to take first?

American may be the only one you need, but if not, take American first.

How long will I need to study, and what to use to study?

One month with the Idiot's guide is plenty, you could do it in 2 weeks if you study well.

Am I making a mistake making these my first CLEP's??

Only if Analyzing and Interpreting lit could be used in it's place for lit credit. Otherwise, these are your only lit choices, so it wouldn't make sense to take another CLEP first.

I got an A in both Eng 101 and 102, but I am a good writer and that's what helped my grades. However, I think these tests are going to be alot different.

Yes. Night and day.

Thank you CookdeRosa, you are ALWAYS so much help!! Really 6 credits from the one exam? Hmm that would be awesome!

I am shooting for the Spanish test now, I am going to take that first.

And to Jec & Cook-those idiot guides are selling for like $50 some places!! Figures no library around has it either. Maybe I will download the e-book for $20.

I can't figure out why they just don't do another printing and get the cost back down to $20. BUT, I am hanging onto mine for that reason- I need it for my kids and who knows how $$$ it will be when the time comes! Have your librarian do a state wide search for you. I bet they can find you one.

I spent $3.95 plus $2 or $3 for shipping & handling for mine in the fall. I am keeping mine because I have told a couple of people they can borrow it. Otherwise I would have sold it to.
