OK this is my first attempt at trying a CLEP test, I'm not sure what to expect and how to go about studying for the American Govmt. test besides going through the practice exams on IC. Any advice for me would be greatly appreciated! Does anyone know how many questions are on the real test????

Hello Mindy and I want to welcome you to IC also!

In addition to studying the IC flashcards, I would read, "The Complete Idiot's Guide to American Government" by Mary M. Shaffrey & Melanie Fonder. Very good concise book.

I don't know what your "testing" goals are but if you are going to wind up taking U.S History I & II down the line, it would probably be to your benefit to take these two exams before the American Government CLEP. From what I've read from others on this forum, this is a good order to take these exams. Others opinions may differ, but this is the strategy I will be utilizing.

I would check out your local public library first to see what resources they have available before purchasing materials. The library is a vast source of information...and it's free!

I would also check out some online resources as well. Try Google Video , they sometimes have videos on certain subjects.

Just for future reference, always check out the Specific Exam Feedback section before you start studying for an exam. There is an abundance of information there so don't sleep on this. It has helped me and many others tremendously. I would also try to grab a copy of the Official CLEP Study Guide, 19th edition by the College Board. If they don't have it at your local library then I believe it will be worth buying. Especially if you are taking alot of CLEPS.

Hope you find this information helpful.

Peace be unto you.

I highly agree with everything Marshall said in his post. He always gives such good advice. Wink

As someone else who considers themselves "relatively" new to this whole "testing out thing", I cannot stress enough how much the exam specific feedback has helped me. While you won't find specific questions that will appear on the exam there -- the info you will find can help tremendously in figuring out where to focus your valuable study time.

One of my biggest issues with each test I've taken is - how do I cram a whole semester's worth of study into a few short weeks (days??) and still get a passing score? That is where I personally feel that the exam specific forum helps me. It just gives me enough information to narrow down my focus so I'm not so scattered and spending time and energy in areas that may not be in my best interest on test day.

So, although I can't help on the Government test itself (haven't take that one yet), that's my two cents in testing in general.

Good luck and welcome to the forum. This is a great group of people and you'll be glad you found it!Smile

I've taken the Amer Gov't CLEP. I think i got a 54 .It's been awhile. It covers some pretty broad knowledge. stuff that you would probably know. Something like which president delivered the civil rights bill in his administration? :LBJ. Alot of the stuff is easy if you like politics and history whether in high school or your own personal time will be easy for you. If you're not too much of a fan of history and politics spend some time studying the cards and such.So relax study and it'll be a healthy challenge for you.

also once you commit to your answer and you think it's right. don't second guess yourself. be confident in your answer.

Hello Mindy!

If you click on the main category link at the very top, the Specific Exam Feedback section will be the last one. Remember that you have to be logged on to IC to see it though.
