StraighterLine Accoutning 1 Question
#1
I spent a long time prepping for Financial Accounting CLEP and failed by 2 points.
I'm now taking the StraighterLine course and have a question regarding it.
The material supplied online, up to the 4th one that I've completed is simplistic, slightly watered down and easy. I don't have the textbook yet but I'm wanting to take the first exam. The review material seems easy to me...
Is the online material about as complex as the actual exams?
Or is are the reading assignments for the book a large portion of the puzzle?

DO NOT TAKE THE TEST WITHOUT THE BOOK
DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES TAKE THE TEST WITHOUT THE BOOK

Once you get the book you will see what I mean. Half of the questions are ripped from the book text. You can literally find the text in the book that answers the question directly.

Also, the problems they have are identical in format to the problems in the book so while taking the test, go find the same problem in the chapter text and use it as a guide to work the one on the test.

I also studied for CLEP accounting and didn't feel that I would pass so I took straighterline I&II. I did very very well on the accounting exams once I realized how to use the book to answer the questions.

Here is an example:

True or false : Preferred stock is blah blah blah

Go to the glossary and read the definition for preferred stock. If it matches, its true. 30% of the questions are like this.

ryoder is 100% correct.

Straighterline is/was an offshoot of McGraw-Hill (the textbook company) so they have tests designed to require purchase of the book.

I picked my book for accounting I and II up from ebay for less than $20. I know its titled Fundamental Accounting Principles, not sure what edition I have but It may be the one just before the current one.

Thanks a TON for the info.
I will study the textbook, I ordered one a month ago but the seller shipped it media mail and it can take 2 months for media mail to arrive.(I paid for Priority mail)
So I ordered another book yesterday, this guy is shipping it Priority Mail.

Should I read just the portions of the book they tell me to or the whole thing?

Most courses (any institution anywhere in the world) use one or more textbooks to supplement the teaching rather than use the entire book. You are perfectly safe to read what you are directed to for each section.

For SL Accounting I, I read each chapter, then took the exam. I received an A in that course. Some of the questions are tricky so be sure to review and read carefully.

For SL Accounting II, I started losing my attention span about test 2, and just went for the tests. I wouldn't recommend that, It resulted in a high B for Accounting II. EC takes the course as pass/fail but being hypercompetitive I should have taken the time like I did on SL Accounting I. CLEP and DSST's instant gratification had spoiled me Smile

YMMV

Go ahead and read the chapters but don't read the sidecars or do a lot of practice problems. You really want to know where the info is in the book so you can find it as fast as possible on the test. Basic accounting knowledge and a super fast page flipping ability can get you a B on these tests. There is some math involved on some questions but you have lots of examples to go from.
I am in anatomy two now and I am able to quickly read the chapter and do well on the quizzes but it is stressful when you have to look up the answer for most of the questions.

Okay I will study what is specified and also do some light reading in the book for stuff I don't fully understand.
I did spend a ton of time with the REA financial accounting book and have a good grasp of accounting.
(although I have holes and stuff I'm poor at)
It's nice that the book contains so much info, as I have had the fun of prepping for 4 CLEP tests at a time then taking them all in one 2 hour sitting.
Remembering that much isn't fun :willynilly:

For far the reading for sections 1 and 2 have been yawn inducing.
I might have a chance at taking the first exam this weekend.
