Financial aid silliness
#1
Hello,

As I previously stated, I only need one more semester to complete my degree through TESC. I applied for financial aid and received over 5,000 in Pell grants. When I learned about this, I was very excited and thought that I would be able to complete my last semester without debt. However, after receiving the award letter from TESC, I realized that their term system has it setup so that I would receive my Fall award money in two or three smaller pieces. This is incredibly frustrating because it makes it impossible to take the courses I need without going into debt. I have also been offered a couple of small loans which will cover the cost of my courses, but it is frustrating that I can't use the money which has been awarded to me!

Does anyone else have similar experiences with financial aid, or is it just me? I do not understand why they cannot just give me my full Fall grant, especially since I will not need to attend after I finish these last six credits.

Sorry about that, just wanted to rant a little and hear if anyone else has a similar experience to my own. :willynilly:

I've thought the same thing. I'm not sure if the fed requires them to prorate it.

Don't waste time by trying to save time. The only sure way to complete your degree is to knock out credits quickly and efficiently.

Don't let easiness bite you in the rear. Know your endgame (where you want to be) and plan backward from there. Your education is a means to an end.

Be honest professionally, socially and academically. There are people (especially little ones) who look up to you and they're going by your example.

Be proud. Whether you're an Engineer or Fast Food worker, there is honor and dignity in hard work.

Picking on people weaker than you only proves that you are a weak person.

I found this online.

http://www.ifap.ed.gov/sfahandbooks/atta...ol3Ch2.pdf

If you scroll over to page 30, you'll find the below paragraph. It seems the school is not allowed to give you the entire grant upfront even if you have less than one year left. Sad

"Once you have determined the payment period, you can determine how much of
the annual award the student will receive for that
payment period. A student can receive a Pell payment only for those
terms, or payment periods, in which the student is enrolled. For some
students, the total disbursements for all payment periods within the
award year will equal the amount of the Scheduled Award. However,
students who attend for less than an academic year (in either clock
credit hours or weeks of instructional time) won’t receive a full
Scheduled Award. This may occur if the student enrolls for only part
of the year or attends part time, or if the program is less than an
academic year in length. These enrollment variations are taken into
account in the calculation of the student’s payment for the payment
period. The five calculation formulas discussed in this chapter account
for these variations differently."

That's a full-year award, so at a school with regular semesters, that amount would have been split in half anyway for the fall. Since TESC has it set up to register for 12-week terms, that is probably how they have to disburse the aid.

Yes, it has to be split.
My suggestion is that you distribute your remaining classes so they ARE covered by your grant and NOT go in debt. I had to stretch my classes out for a full year to use my award, the only reason to take a loan is if you're impatient lol. In all honesty, unless you have a job promotion hinged on this degree, waiting a few more months would be the smarter path.

I was in a similar position. I got about $5000 of Pell Grant funds, split into 4 segments. I took 2 TESC classes per 12-week term for 3 terms. It worked out because I wasn't in a hurry to graduate, I was also working so it wasn't too crazy a workload, and my classes were completely paid for, with like $50 extra sent to me each time--that helped pay for books Big Grin
