What exactly are fema courses ?

They are free courses on emergency management offered to the public by the federal government. Frederick Community College will transcribe the courses for you and even let you complete a degree with them, but the school charges $77 per credit. Thomas Edison State College and Charter Oak State College will transcribe the courses for free. TESC takes them as free electives, but will put them in the area of study for the Homeland Security and Environmental, Safety, and Security Technologies programs.

So after taking the classes through federal gov. I would have to send them to Frederick CC?
What are the actual steps to complete these credits ?

It depends on your school.

If you are with Excelsior...
Take the course(s), and transcribe the credits through Frederick.

If you are with TESC...
Take the course(s), and have FEMA send the transcripts (free) directly to TESC. TESC will accept the transcripts without any additional step or expense. I tried to attach a document received from Advising that lists the approved FEMA courses they will accept, but the file size is too big. If you email Advising and ask for a list of acceptable FEMA courses for credit, they will send you a neatly-assembled .pdf with the FEMA code and name of courses you can take and have transcribed without any issue. For all but one degree program, FEMAs will only fulfill Free Electives. The AAS - Environmental, Safety, Security degree will apply FEMAs to the Area of Study.

If you are with Charter Oak...
Same as TESC. Transcripts can go direct from FEMA to Charter Oak without any additional step or expense.

If you are with other schools...
Check to see whether they accept them, and what their required process is for inclusion in your degree plan.

As I said above, FEMA courses can also be used in the area of study for the Homeland Security and Emergency Management program, so it's two programs. It's listed on the credit distribution page.

Does anyone have an update on exactly what FEMA courses Excelsior accepts and what degree plan/course description they fall under? For example, I am enrolled in a BS in business degree plan and I need:

Would the FEMA courses count toward the remaining 21 Arts and Sciences? I have contacted Excelsior and gotten mixed answers... truly curious as to which exactly to take and I do not want to waste my time.

As far as I know, only 1 FEMA counts towards Arts & Sciences at EC. The rest are Applied Professional. It looks like you would get the most out of CLEP (6 credit exams, like A&I Lit) and DSST for your A&S credits. Also, be sure to max out the 9 credits below calculus rule through CLEP or ALEKS.

Does anyone know if charter Oak will credit Bank FEMA courses? That way they can be transferred directly over to Excelsior.

I know this is an older thread but I figure this info may be helpful to a lot of people. Here is a list of the FEMAs that TESC will accept, it's a bit more of a complete list than ones in this thread so I figured it might be useful.

Thanks sklineho. That is really helpful! Did you use a list that was recently acquired from TESC?

I think I used a list from degreeforum.net (uh... this site) dated Feb 2011, and after I finished taking them all I found another list dated Aug 2011. There were just a couple discrepancies. It looks like your list has a test or two that is different as well. Also, some of the tests from the list on degreeforum.net look as if you have to take one FEMA course "plus" and additional FEMA course which equates to a single course at TESC. It is not clear if this results in 1 credit awarded or 2 credits. How did you handle these in your list?

Frederick Community College (FCC) is even more confusing in regards to how credits transfer over. For example, if you look at Animals in Disasters (Letter of Recognition - 7) it appears from this that you get 6 credits for taking 4 courses. Other entries look as if you need to take several FEMA courses to earn one credit. It looks like the way you approached this was to just take the courses that looked like they had a one to one correspondence. It that correct?
