Favorite Book Overall!
#61
nick94 Wrote:Wow. This post sure has some dust on it! Since I've returned to the forum now I thought I might add a new favorite book of mine.

Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand

It's a lengthy, but good, read! Smile
*bashes head in*

How could you like that book?

Oh my, and I have so many fave books. Top two of all time are probably To Kill a Mockingbird and Cry, the Beloved Country.

More recently I have fallen in LOVE with two authors...

John Green -
An Abundance of Katherines: entertaining light read, nothing amazing other than funny writing style,
Looking for Alaska: I am so beyond in love with this book. That's all I can even say about it. In my top 15 or 20 books.

Jonathan Safran Foer -
Eating Animals: If you have any interest in food or animals whatsoever, read this book. Yes, it is about factory farming. No, that doesn't mean you shouldn't read it. Very entertaining non-fiction.
Everything is Illuminated: novel that I haven't read yet, damn that school getting in the way Wink
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close: Written in a very quirky style with a large conglomeration of "stuff" on its pages, this story is mainly from the perspec of a really smart & strange 9 year old, with portions from his grandparents' perspec. Kind of sad, but also quite funny occasionally. Probably in my top 30 books.

I mostly read non-fiction because I am a crafter with a penchant for cookbooks, but when I want some relaxing downtime I revisit my old favorites:

Fiction:
Persuasion by Jane Austen
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
Kino no Tabi - Keiichi Sigsawa (it's in English)
The Arrival - Shaun Tan
Roverandom - Tolkien

Non-Fiction:
Good Without God - Greg Epstein
Taking Back Childhood - Nancy Carlsson-Paige

DSST: Environment & Humanity - 69 | Lifespan Developmental Psychology - 62 | Here's To Your Health - 440

BS - Maternal Child Health 12/2012 - Union Institute and University

I agree about Atlas Shrugged. It's on my worst books ever list right up there with The Time Travelers Wife and The Shack. I don't see why anyone liked them.

More likes here...
all Dickens except Great Expectations, which is a classic I dislike as much as Wuthering Heights (The Twilight book of it's time! LOL. Oddly enough I consider Twilight to be good campy fun.)

Harry Potter series

I love Katherine Valentine's series. Very fun and clean. I so wish she would write more.

JD Robb in Death series. Very mature murder detective series set just enough in the future to be different yet still identify with the settings.

Hahaha I'm not quite sure...I just did! To me it was a great picture of what can happen if the government were to take over every aspect of the economy. Hence I liked it! Big Grin

John Grisham also has a couple favorites of mine,
The Partner
The Broker
Ford County Stories

I tend to like weird books haha.

Ugh, I don't find glorifying selfishness makes a good story. Although I'm a fan of capitalism, I don't believe in the übermensch. At. All.

I thought it made for a decent story, but not a lifestyle I'd recommend. I tended to agree more on how the government, trying to do whatever it wanted, just made things worse and worse. One of my favorite parts was when Dagny tells the officials that if they want to save the economy they should lift taxes, lift regulations, and let the people who know what they're doing run the industries.

William P Young

Ehh, there's already plenty of books that do that without all the unnecessary bad form. Fahrenheit 451, Animal Farm, 1984, Brave New World... more recently the Giver trilogy... I'm not a fan of the Ayn Rand brand of philosophy. Capitalism is supposed to be about giving every business a fair shot at doing what they do best, not about encouraging monopolies by the übermensch.

Exactly. (Tho I have yet to find anything by Ray Bradbury that I enjoy. He just grates for some reason. I don't like the movies based on his books either. *shrug*)

The Shack is supposedly a Christian book, but I found the theology of it to be so poorly thought out and so poorly written as to be a constant aggrevation. The plot was meandering and directionless and the climax was decidedly anti-climatic. Not that I'm a critic or anything.

The Giver series by Lois Lowery is excellent! Short, but very well done.

On a Pale Horse and its sequels by Piers Anthony are good light reading.
